10 essentials. Hikers don’t leave without them but many trail riders keep them in their saddle bags, or don’t carry them at all. I don’t head out without these items and they’re kept on me- NOT in my saddle bags. If I get separated from my horse these are the items that will help me stay safe overnight in an emergency. Not pictured is a lighter and fire starter. What items do you bring?

Traditional highline kits utilize 5/8” poly rope (sometimes even larger diameter), metal connection points, nylon tree savers with steel rings and come with a heavy stuff sack. This rope has a breaking point of 5500 to 18,000 lbs! Let’s break this down with the breaking points of commonly used gear:

Brass Halter Hardware: 750lbs
1 inch Biothane: 1000lbs
5/16 inch Biothane: 900lbs
1/4 inch Biothane: 600lbs
Lead Rope Bolt Snaps: 100-300lbs for medium quality, 500lbs for heavy duty.

So it’s safe to say any of your halters or leads will break far before your highline would break. So why carry extra pounds?

My kit has a 1000lbs breaking point at the tree straps and even less on the prusik. My horse isn’t a puller and if he’s pulling that means he’s in trouble and I want things to break. This kit saved me pounds from a traditional store bought kit and comes in at only 6 ounces including a rechargeable halter light. 💡

Let’s talk gear. What’s everyone want to see? Saddle bag contents? Food? Must haves? Camera gear?

Throwback to Moquis first pack trip. Getting a drink from Santiam Lake under Three Fingered Jack. The mosquitos were BRUTAL but the views and having a whole lake to ourselves over 4th of July was worth it. I’m also 110% sure I heard bigfoot in the middle of the night since there was no other explanation for what I heard 👀😬

If you’re like me then winter is dragging. I’d rather be eating up the trail and enjoying little moments like this. It’s been raining for weeks now- and it’s ruining my motivation. I should be deep in maps planning out next years routes but I just can’t get out of this seasonal funk. Anyone else feel whole again when they’re seeing the world between your horses years?

There’s still 3 months of 2024 left but I’m already dreaming about next year. Thinking up a few 2025 goals for us:

- Complete an endurance LD.
- Venture back to Utah and ride his HMA, slot canyons and national parks.
- USDF All Breed Awards 🤞🏻
- Cross off another 50 miles of Pacific Crest Trail
- Add one more skillset to our journey; cows or jumps?

Our last pack trip of the year was our best to date. We had originally intended on going to the Wallowas but the weather wasn’t looking great so we quickly came up with plan B. And let me just say- plan B was an absolute stunning trip. Here’s our last few days summed up in 20 photos. Now onto planning next years adventures!

Understanding wildfire threats is essential for outdoor users, especially those with livestock. Evacuating animals is complex; pre-planning, awareness of weather conditions, and early action are crucial. Utilizing digital tools like apps helps monitor fire risks. Safe camping during fire season hinges on knowledge, preparedness, and timely decision-making to minimize stress and ensure safety....

2023 was a vibe. We marked off so many goals. Some of these ribbons were silly, others mean a lot because I overcame a lot of mental blocks. I got back to showing, I even went to a show alone. I mastered the dance of groundwork and ended the year with AA champion for in hand tests. To some it might not seem like much but for me- I ignored groundwork the majority of my equestrian life 🤣 Some of these are for trail miles, some are top ten end of year with the mustang club, a high point thrown in. If we hadn’t gotten any of these I’d still love Moqui to the end of the world- but it’s really awesome to know our hard work paid off.
