Kind. Loving. Selfless.

Ulises Sarria, a wide receiver for UR's football team, used these words to describe D’Sean Perry, who Sarria considered one of his best friends and a brother. Perry, a University of Virginia junior linebacker, was fatally shot alongside two of his teammates, Devin Chandler and Lavel Davis, Jr. on Nov. 13 coming back from a school trip in Washington, D.C.

Sarria, who attended high school with Perry at Gulliver Prep in Miami, Florida, said he initially heard about the shooting from a group chat he was in with Perry and other friends. Then, Sarria heard Perry had died.

“Once I had found out the news, it was probably like three or four in the morning,” Sarria said. “I was just crying. I couldn’t really sleep that night.”

Sarria, who was a year below Perry at Gulliver Prep said the two met when Sarria was in ninth grade.

After a month of now regular owl attacks on University of Richmond community members, one ended up in a catch-and-release trap the evening of Sept. 22, but it was gone by the time proper authorities could relocate it.

UR has created a catch-and-release program in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture, Sunni Brown, director of media and public relations, wrote in an email to The Collegian.

The Collegian is now working to keep track of the attacks through a map to give students and community members a better idea about where attacks are frequently happening. Students, faculty, staff and community members who have been attacked can fill out the form linked in the article to help with the creation of the map.

The Board of Trustees voted on Sept. 23 to rename the University of Richmond Law School because of its former namesake’s enslavement of at least 43 people.

After a unanimous vote, the Board decided to change the school’s name from the T.C. Williams School of Law to the University of Richmond School of Law, UR President Kevin Hallock and the Board announced in a message to community members. The law school was named after Thomas C. Williams Sr., who operated to***co businesses in Virginia. He attended Richmond College from 1846 to 1849 and was a member of the Board from 1881 to 1889.

Local government records dating back from 1857 to 1863 revealed Williams’ involvement in enslavement through his businesses and personal affairs.

This change was the result of efforts from the Black Law Student Association, which has been advocating for the removal of Williams’ name since 2019.

The RVA Street Art Festival took place from Sept. 16-18, marking its 10th anniversary. The festival brings in numerous artists from the community to create murals at designated locations. This year, event organizers decided to return to their roots and take the festival back to the now-famous Canal Walk Power Plant. Over the course of the three-day event, attendees watched as the old murals were covered up by new ones painted by a group of new and returning artists, including Hamilton Glass, who painted a mural in the University of Richmond’s Multicultural Space.

The festival aims to showcase local and national talent while revitalizing areas of the city. Organizers also use the event to support children’s art education in the surrounding area.

University of Richmond alumnus and adviser to former President Donald Trump, Kash Patel, ‘02, was named in an FBI investigation into Trump’s potential mishandling of classified documents.

On Aug. 26, the U.S. Department of Justice released a heavily redacted version of an affidavit FBI agents used to obtain a warrant for their Aug. 8 search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort residence for classified records.

Patel is originally from Garden City, New York. He majored in history while at UR before going on to serve in several high-level government positions on the National Security Council and as chief of staff for the acting U.S. secretary of defense under Trump. Several news organizations including NBC News, CNN and ABC News also identify Patel as a "Trump loyalist."

UPDATED: The University of Richmond Police Department is investigating a Sept. 3 altercation between several students and a delivery driver in which a first-year student was filmed repeatedly punching and kicking the driver’s car and fighting the driver. The delivery driver pulled a gun as the student continued to taunt him.

One student reportedly used racist language against the driver during the incident that occurred behind Marsh Hall, UR President Kevin Hallock wrote in a Sept. 6 email to the campus community. No one other than law enforcement officials is allowed to carry fi****ms on campus, Hallock said.

Students and faculty have been attacked by owls on campus. Incidents have occurred on both sides of Westhampton Lake between the hours of 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.

“It sounds like it’s taken over campus,” said Evan Costales, a sophomore who was roughed up by an owl on Aug. 30.

Biology professor Peter Smallwood said that UR was dealing with a barred owl, which are common in the southern portion of the United States. Smallwood is working with Facilities, Public Safety and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources to protect the community and the bird, wrote Sunni Brown, director of media and public relations, in an email to The Collegian.

University of Richmond President Kevin Hallock and the Board of Trustees awarded Paul Queally with a medal meant to honor those who have given “exceptional and meritorious service” to UR. After serving on the Board for 20 years, Queally stepped down from his role as rector on June 30.

During his latest term, Queally had initially disapproved of changing the names of then Ryland and Freeman halls because it promoted “cancel culture.”

Queally never publicly apologized for his refusal to change building names, his behavior toward a staff member or for referring to white students as "regular students" as opposed to students of color.

Four other trustees are leaving the Board and have already been replaced.

Donna Reeck was born in New York in 1955. At 17, she got engaged. After her engagement, her mom sat down with her to talk about what form of birth control she would use to avoid a teenage pregnancy; she chose the intrauterine device known as the Dalkon Shield. Reeck was one of 3.6 million women who made that choice, a choice that would cost some of them their lives and others their fertility.

Listen to the full episode that explores how the Dalkon Shield changed Reeck’s life and the lawsuits in the shadow of Robins' legacy through the link in our bio, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Podbean.
