Hello Porchers!

Wow, an actual blog on a Friday, who knew? I hope you had a safe and joyous New Year, As my previous blog said, I spent the evening with Mrs. Professor at the Kimball Theatre hosting the last Bobby Blackhat New Year’s Eve Blues Spectacular in front of 300 blues fans, many of which had been in the audience for every show.

It was a great time and the audience was very responsive and several got out of their seats to dance wherever there was floor space.

I don’t know about you, but as an entertainer, I’ve always enjoyed seeing people have a good time. It’s one of the things that has driven me since the first time I stepped on a stage or in front of a camera. It’s one of the cornerstones of John’s Porch, I want you to have a good time.

Whether it’s good music in different genres, or bad jokes, I really want you to have a good time.

Now, on to what’s happening this weekend: There’s some rockabilly right up front and the energy that the group channels feed the other songs in the set. There are old favorites like The B-52’s, Warren Zevon, Laura Tate, and Marc Cohn.

There’s our Celtic Connection and block programming from Natalie Cole (one with her father, Nat King Cole), ZZ Top, and Counting Crows.

But wait, that’s only the first two hours, the third hour consists of Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, some blues artists that don’t get enough airplay, as well as a few surprises.

Where would we be without the surprises?

So, set that alarm for early and join me up on the world’s largest metaphorical mythological porch. It’s never too cold on the porch, some come on up and have a good time. I guarantee it will be more fun when you’re there. John’s Porch Blog For The Night Before Christmas

It’s been a busy month here on the Porch and I apologize for not being consistent with getting this blog posted. We’ve all been busy around VPM, and I still have a couple of more appearances to go before it’s all over.

Complain, complain, complain…

I really am a lucky individual. I’ve got a job that lets me work around very creative people both on site and by extension the artists whom I get the opportunity to play; no one tells me what I can play; and I have great listeners (our family) who encourage me and suggest even more great music I can play.

Life is sweet.

Porch Santa has been busy this year making appearances with Connor’s Heroes, the Richmond Pops, and the Central Virginia Wind Symphony as well as diving feet first through a few chimneys of various people’s homes. But he still made time to help me program six hours of great holiday music and only repeat one or two songs.

I want to thank you all for your continued support of John’s Porch, I am overwhelmed by the number of people who write or call with thoughts and suggestions. I appreciate the way you have taken to this experiment that took me more than 25 years to find a station manager who was brave enough to give it a chance.

We’ve gone from a one-hour experiment to a two-hour once a week show to its current three-hour twice a week spectacular.

I’ll be back live with fresh shows next weekend and I hope you will join me.
