The hurricane damaged an estimated 80 percent of the buildings in the River Arts District of Asheville, N.C., and upended the lives of artists who had recast the city as a cultural force.

From The Hechinger Report..."Asheville’s schools are closed “indefinitely.” Henderson County, which borders South Carolina, also closed schools until further notice. The superintendent of Haywood County, west of Asheville, told Hoke seven athletic fields were destroyed by the storm and the building that houses its IT services became inoperable. District and emergency management are using schools as shelters and places to distribute supplies."

The close call in Lure Lake, NC is a wake-up for communities downstream from dams. According to the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, the number of deficient high-hazard-potential dams now exceeds 2,300.

Town officials disregarded state warnings and apparently did little maintenance work on their high-risk dam for years. Catching up on those overdue repairs will come at a steep price.
