There I was at my desk, minding my own business, working feverishly on projects due within the next 24 hours, and I heard it. It sounded like a small twin engine plane was landing in my back yard. It was beyond distracting and loud – really loud.

I like a good princess bed. A good princess bed makes me happy. I like handmade quilts made with love by my Mawmaw, 500 thread count sheets, fluffy duvets, an exorbitant number of down pillows – all the things. And I like my bed tall. I don’t want to have to go down to get into it; I might not can get back up. I want to move laterally or step up just a tad – closer to Jesus so He can easily hear my prayers. That’s just considerate.

Oil and water, alcohol and bleach, baking soda and vinegar – unless you are making a volcano for your baby’s science project – the list goes on and on. But in South Texas there’s one thing for certain that are not bosom buddies and never will be: snow.

I understand that at any given time, I am likely not the smartest person in the room. I’m good with that. I really enjoy talking with folks who possess a different skillset than I do. I still love to learn, and I will ask a gazillion questions. It’s why I read so much. But there is something this month that I just can’t wrap my head around. It’s called “Dry January.”

I left Texas mid-November. It was a balmy 70 degrees as it tends to be in Texas during a cool spell. While I was headed West to a colder climate, I had no worries. After all, I had a coat there, along with sweaters, sweats and such. I was good.

Suddenly, unexpectedly on Christmas Eve, it happened. Mr. Kaminski had a revelation.

“Let’s go to Walmart,” he declared.

“Baby, it’s nearly 5 pm. I doubt Walmart is open,” I replied gently.

“Oh, they are. They are open until 6 pm. Let’s go!” he said excitedly.

For the love of the Lord, I had no idea why he wanted to do last-minute Christmas Eve shopping at all, much less at Walmart. Our halls were decked, our fridge was full, our gifts were procured and wrapped. We were beyond ready.
