Jamie Ray turns every setback into gold. The country trap artist's road to stardom has been long and winding, by his own admission. Before he released “MAGIC CITY COWBOY” in 2021 (which now has nearly five million YouTube views and a massive TikTok presence), he almost quit a number of times. But he’s never wanted to be anything other than a star, so he learned to keep betting on himself, a check that was always cashed by his unique pop instincts and his genre-blurring songwriting approach. 2022’s Country Trap was already a sensation and he seems poised to take his unique blend of alt-country, rap, trap, and radio-ready pop to even greater heights on his new EP, ALTOID COWBOY.
On the project’s opening track, “UH HUH,” featuring Texas rap star Tay Money, Jamie Ray makes his intentions known: “I’m in the back of the bar, strummin’ this guitar / And you know what’s behind these strings? / Yeah, I’m the Fender-pluckin’ plug, pills, yeena, and the bud / Come and tell me what you need / Oh, I got it.” That blend of musicianship and hedonism is the epitome of his immensely playful and party-ready music. He’ll write your favorite songwriter under the table—and then drink them under it, too.
Ray honed his musical chops as a teen in Winter Haven, Florida, freestyling with his friends before, during, and after school, and recording whenever family funds allowed. “Music was always in my blood,” he says. “I never wanted to do anything else.” Ray’s mom was in prison for most of his childhood, so his songwriter dad introduced him to the Southern blues strain of rap he grew up on. That’s why ALTOID COWBOY may interpolate modern sounds, but has a classic soul. “I grew up listening to Boosie, Plies, Weezy, artists like that. Everything I know about melody comes from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, too,” Ray says.
