Fondly known as Skeeno, Reno’s underground music scene centered on fast, loud music, but grew to be known for its gender inclusivity, renegade spirit and passionate political and personal views -- and often humorous overtones. The exhibit hopes to capture not only a look at local and visiting bands and fans, but also to provide a glimpse into the underlying creativity, rebellious mindset and fiercely independent ethic that gave rise to the influential and long running band 7 Seconds--as well as a host of lesser known bands, artists, and activists. The heart of the story will be an exhibit featuring 50+ black and white photos (with a few color sprinkled in) by Gary Elam and Cari Marvelli, who shot their images, respectively, while working as a photojournalist for the Sparks Tribune and while publishing the fanzine, Media Massacre. The photography exhibit runs from August 11-Sept 4, 2015 at The Holland Project in Reno, Nevada. The exhibit will also feature a community photo board to help round out picture of this era with what is not captured elsewhere. (Fun-filled opening on Friday, August 14). The story will also be told through the words of Kevin Seconds, lead singer of 7 Seconds, at what is sure to be a funny and passionate talk as he waxes nostalgic about the early days of the punk scene in Reno at the Nevada Museum of Art on August 13, 2015. This evening will also feature a screening of the short black and white 1981 film 7 Seconds Goes to San Francisco by Gary Elam (and possibly one other film). The story will be rounded out through printed words – a reading room of old-school fanzines, an exhibit of flyers and a collection of letters written to both 7 Seconds and the all-girl band The Wrecks will accompany the main exhibit at The Holland Project. Keep an eye on our events page for specifics of the exhibits. A sister show at the Micro Gallery in Bibo Coffee Company will feature artwork old and new by Kevin Seconds and Kevin Cox who were active members of the early Reno punk scene. If we’re lucky, we’ll also have readings of essays for an upcoming book “Growing up Punk in Northern Nevada” and maybe some music offerings. Get ready for a fun ride! Inquire within if you want to participate. We want to bring this story back to Reno, so that not only the history of alternative cultures may be explored, remembered and preserved – but shared with those who are curious or inspired about a story of doing things differently.
