Christmas is over, NYE is soonish, and I’ve lost track of what day it is or how many of these pretzels I’ve had. 🥨 Raise your hand if you’re also not entirely sure what you’re supposed to be doing at the moment. I vote movie marathons and pajamas for the foreseeable future, who’s in? ps : had a lot of questions about these pretzels we made, they’re just made by melting white chocolate, dipping various length pretzel sticks in, and then tapping the dipped ends into a mixture of crushed Oreo cookies (I used mint ones cause holidays) and silver sanding sugar. A little look back on my year; at first I wasn’t planning on doing a recap, a highlight reel of sorts, but something changed in me over the past week. I started to reflect on just how big of a year this was for me; not just in terms of experiences and travel (although that was a major highlight) but in terms of both professional & personal growth. I’ve been sharing my life on the Internet for over 10 years, close to 13 now I think. But it wasn’t until this year, right at the very start, that I really started to see some growth. Began to explore new ways of creating content, letting go some of the reservations I had, and really allowing myself to feel free to create. I started some new series here (like #theunreliablenarrator), played with new formats (like voiceover and short form stories) - I even upgraded my camera lens to be able to achieve the cinematic look that I’ve always wanted. I started to feel more confident in my work, and found a really wonderful response to it - for what felt like the first time ever. in terms of personal growth, this year, New York really felt like home. I moved a little over 2 years ago from LA, and spent the first year trying to figure out my place in both the city and in the Hudson Valley. Juggling the two worlds took time for me to figure out, but this year I feel like I really found what works for me, the right balance between home, city, and travel. I also feel like I started to find really lasting friendships on a different coast, and that has been the greatest gift yet. To find fellow creatives that I respect & admire - but also that I just want to go and have a drink with and to share time together. 2023 was a year of travel, exploration, but also in finding joy and being at home with my little family. Romanticizing the quiet and the simple moments just as often as the big ones. I’m so so grateful to have gotten to share this past year with you, and I cannot wait to see what 2024 has in store. And what I mean by ‘cancelled plans’ is saying no to anything that doesn’t feel entirely right for me in 2024. No to the things that do not fulfill me, no to an overbooked schedule, and no to being self-critical. I’m very much looking forward to being gentle to myself in the new year, unleashing my creativity, romanticizing the little moments, and exploring new places that I’ve only dreamt of. That’s all that I’m hoping for this year - continuing to see art in everything around me. Of course, sometimes it’s easier than others. Traveling somewhere new, seeing new sights, it becomes easy to view just about everything in a romantic light. I sat on this balcony in Paris and with that overwhelming sense of awe I viewed everything around me as art. The birds flying by as the sun was setting, the man watering his plants in the window opposite, the people walking below, off in search of dinner or drinks, laughing and chatting. It was easy to view everything through that lens. But I hope that I continue to view the simple and ordinary moments with that same sense. That I can admire the way the light falls on my (admittedly) dusty mirror in my room and see it as art. That I can look at my laundry drying in the living room and realize that if I squint it almost looks like a painting. That I can choose my favorite dishes to put my least exciting meals on and think that it looks like something out of a film. That I can turn living itself into an art form. . . Warm baths with bergamot oil, the first snowfall of the season, hot coffee in the morning followed by hot broth and pastina in the afternoon, catching up on reading, cozy socks, and above all - slowing down. I’m still relatively new to a proper winter having lived in California my entire life until just over 2 years ago, so each time the cold weather, snow, and shorter days creep in, I feel a real sense of curiosity and awe. I think it can be easy to spot the difficulties with winter, so I’m trying to embrace the changes and find the beauty in these little moments.
