This fascinates me. Also, in case you were wondering, the word
'sarcasm,' is rooted in Greek meaning to 'tear flesh.' Ouch.

Something I've noticed that perplexes me: A business owner will spend a large amount of money for a full brand campaign, specifically, their logo and tagline. Then they don't follow up on two very important action items:

1/ They do not request a flash drive (or upload to their Dropbox or Google docs account) with all of the materials their graphic designer worked on. This includes all EPS, JPG, etc. files of every single iteration of their brand materials.

2/ They do not engage the services of a licensed IP attorney to TM those materials.

I ask myself why? If, as a savvy business owner, you've spent the money, you must make sure you close the loop on this branding exercise. To not do this is foolish.

First, if it's not included in the engagement contract with the graphic designer, add your own clause that upon completion of the project, the designer has a couple of business days to get all of those materials to you. Just do it.

Second, once you have everything, make it a priority to get your logo and tagline to an IP attorney. I know a couple of stellar IP attorneys, if you don't know whom to trust.

Recently, at a networking meeting, I complimented someone who had the foresight to trademark herself as "The Mortgage Lady." What a great idea! She told me that I should trademark myself as "The Word Lady."

I am pleased to say that that particular trademark was available, so I have now appropriated it for myself.

The Word Lady™ has spoken.

I have an axe to grind with Calendly. There is nothing wrong with their technology or their service. Their spelling is a different matter.

As you can see from the screenshot I took of my email signature block, the word 'complementary' here is incorrect. Spelled with an 'e,' the word means 'to complete.' The meaning I'm going after in this context is 'as a courtesy, free.' That word is spelled with an 'i.' Complimentary.

I noticed this a while ago and nearly had kittens when I thought that I somehow misspelled the word - for all to see, no less. Very bad. Nope. It wasn't me. It's the Calendly hyperlink protocol.

This brings me back to my axe that needs grinding. They still haven't fixed it.

Don't rely on spellcheck.

Good article. Written for fiction, but a lot of it applies to non-fiction, which applies to me and most of which I already knew. Good reminders, though, as I begin 2024 in earnest.
