The Backlog: Mini Metro

Mini Metro has you placing tracks between different train stations that are shown as basic shapes (starts off with squares, circles, and triangles). Each track line has its own color. The goal of the game is building your metro as big as you can. Each of the passengers are also basic shapes, and represent what station they need to get to. If the waiting line at each station gets too big for long enough, you lose the game. Because of this whole game being one big simple gameplay loop, it feels very much like an arcade game rather than a full-fledged puzzle experience that it's marketed as. With the number of passengers you've transported sort of being the high score within each playable map. The maps are real life locations, and are shown by simple visuals. Blue on the screen being rivers, and land usually being just green or brown. After finishing the previous chapter of my next novel, I had the thought of looking for the chapter themed around Halloween. To my surprise I went back to see that I had started, but not finished it. So I will be working on that wonderfully around the Halloween season. I promise I didn't plan that, but maybe I subconsciously did. The spooky season isn't just great for writing, one day before Halloween is my birthday, so I have a strong affinity for this time of year...(click on the link below to read on).

Everyone has their favorite game series or genre. I found out after two or so decades that I like third person, goreless, melancholy adventures with great gameplay, music, and themes of life and death. Team Ico’s 2005 masterpiece, Shadow of the Colossus released originally for the PlayStation 2, is one of these games...(click on the link below to read on).

I decided to play Pilotwings for the Super Nintendo this week for the backlog blogpost. Pilot Wings is a flight simulator of sorts. Planes are not the only vehicle here, the player can also skydive, use a jetpack, paraglide, and even use a helicopter. At least...(click on the link below to read on).

After my last Barnes & Noble book signing in American Fork, I was able to go to another one in Orem the following weekend. I’ve requested to be at B & N in such a way that I basically go to both stores every 4-5 months. It's not a crazy amount of time, but it's definitely worth it when I can go. The last visit in Orem showed me how getting yourself out there can give you great opportunities that you just wouldn't have gotten otherwise...(click on the link below to read on!)
