For anyone with concerns over the Libertarian Party Presidential nominee, and as a disclaimer, we do not speak for the Libertarian Party of Rhode Island . However, here's some inside baseball:
The LPRI gets three spots at the national convention, primarily determined by membership numbers. Any member can attend the local convention and run to be a delegate. Most years, it is no competitive and a matter of who is willing to cover the expenses and make the work/life sacrifice to attend the national convention.
So the challenge to everyone that is not happy with this year's outcome is to go to the local LPRI convention and run for one of those allocated spots. We'd love to see that be competitive.
Chase Oliver is not the first, second, or third choice for many libertarians to be the nominee, and neither was Rectenwald. Let's face it, the entire slate of potential candidates was a bit of a dumpster fire this year.
But as a Rhode Island libertarian, context is key. We need to recognize that the LP candidate is not going to win nationally or within RI. We know Biden is going to win this state; it's simple math.
However, for the LPRI to achieve recognized party status, they need 5% in this election. Therefore, when libertarians are voting in the 2024 general election, in RI, you are casting a vote for that 5% goal, not for who is on the ballot. There is an achievable electoral outcome for libertarians here, one that will have a meaningful impact for us and our candidates at the local and state level which is most important.
Voting for the Republican in this state truly achieves nothing; for all intents and purposes, it is a wasted vote. And thinking strategically, Oliver is way more likely to pull votes from Biden, so the RI Republicans should be thanking us.
Like it or not, these are the rules we have to work with. If you don't like them (and we don't), we suggest getting involved and/or supporting the RI Voters for Election Reform PAC at http://riverpac.org/ and fighting to change our laws to allow for easier access for third parties.
