It's about to start! The first leg of my European tour starts tomorrow in Belfast and runs until May 13th. On this first leg I'll be on the road in the UK in partnership with the great percussionist and teacher .

I would like to ask permission and thank the drum masters and directors, and the percussionists of the samba schools in Rio de Janeiro. Despite all the obstacles and prejudices, they hold Carioca and Brazilian culture at arm's length. I continue on my mission to spread this culture and increase the reach and scope of work for everyone.

I edited this video a little differently than others. I just included the esquentas and paradinhas and cut out the long bits in between. I hope you all like it!
You can't see it in this video but it is raining like crazy and had been raining for hours. The surdo heads were covered in plastic but in these conditions it is a tough decision whether to tune or not. I was explained to me that the plastic covers only help so much and after hours of rain the heads were wet just from the humidity in the air so if they were to tune the surdos too much they would ruin the heads. And for like 45 or so surdos that's quite expensive to replace. Tijuca normally has really nice surdo tuning but the hours of rain prevented this.

Editei este vídeo de forma um pouco diferente dos outros. Apenas incluí as esquentas e as paradinhas e cortei os pedaços longos entre elas. Espero que vocês gostem!
Você não pode ver neste vídeo, mas está chovendo loucamente e já chovia há horas. Os peles do surdo estavam cobertas de plástico, mas nestas condições é uma decisão difícil afinar ou não. Me explicaram que as capas de plástico não ajudam muito e depois de horas de chuva os peles ficavam molhadas só pela umidade do ar, então se afinassem demais os surdos estragariam os peles. E por cerca de 45 surdos isso é muito caro para comprar de novo. A Tijuca normalmente tem uma afinação de surdo muito boa, mas as horas de chuva impediram isso.

Round 2 Vila Isabel
Vila Isabel repique de bossas play in Setor 3. The ensaio técnicos are free so the samba school fan clubs really come out to show the samba school some love. You'll see them with smoke bombs, giant flags, fireworks and lights. They will even sometimes pass out small flags with the samba school logo on them to the crowd.
Vila Isabel has TWELVE repique de bossa players split into two groups of 6. Six toward the front and six toward the back with a few caixa and 3rd players in between them.
As far as I am aware this is the only school that does this.
Congratulations to all the players, directors and Mestre Macaco Branco! A couple of these players were very friendly and chatty friendly. I had fun asking them questions about how it works with 12 players etc.

Você os verá com bombas de fumaça, bandeiras gigantes, fogos de artifício e luzes. Às vezes, eles até distribuem pequenas bandeiras com o logotipo da escola de samba para a multidão.

It is fascinating how 3500 people from each school come together to show a year of work! So much work and creativity goes into the costumes, parade floats, dance and singing and everything. And that's 3500 in just one Samba school. 6 to 8 samba schools parade each night Friday to Monday. It's a bit mind blowing. And for most of these schools, unless they make the top 6 in Grupo Especial they will not do this parade again.

This is one of the best moments of the Repiques de Bossa Paraíso do Tuiuti at the ensaio técnico 2024! They were in front of Setor 2 and 3 right before turning to go into the first recuo. You can see Mestre Washington in there directing the repiques. Congratulations to Mestre Marcão, Mestre Washington, Diretor Celso Frazao and all the players in this bateria.
I went to a Tuiuti street rehearsal a couple of months ago and Mestre Washington, Celso and another director (unfortunately I don't know his name) invited me to come in a record near the repiques! That was such a nice thing for them to do. That kindness has stuck with me! Thank you!!!

Fui a um ensaio na rua Tuiuti há alguns meses e o Mestre Washington, o Celso e o outro diretor (infelizmente eu não sei o nome dele) me convidaram para entrar em um disco perto dos repiques! Isso foi uma coisa tão legal para eles fazerem. Essa gentileza ficou comigo! Muito obrigada!!!

Watch as the player nearest me breaks a stick right in the chamada! You can hear it go in the sound of his drum. Ha! These guys were fantastic!
This was my first video ever recording inside a bateria on the Avenida with my press pass. 1/2 my brain was trying to get a good view of these guys and the other 1/2 was saying "Wow, I can't believe I get to do this!"
I learned so much doing these videos, I got better as things went along. Better at capturing what it feels like to stand there next to these fantastic players but also at capturing the sense of the "force of nature" that occurs inside a bateria of 250 people working together. Who have worked together and rehearsed for months, years even. But beyond that grew up together, are family, long time friends, cousins. Samba is community, a part of who they are.
The "force of nature" feeling can't really be described in words, or at least I don't have that capability. It can only be experienced. I'm hoping to bring a little taste of that to this youtube channel.
At the time of recording the camera was new to me and I was using manual settings, they were being all quixotic with the lights in there so much of this video is overexposed. Getting better as I go. Thanks for reading!
