Harvest Strategies 2024- What to Expect from Tuna RFMOs This Year
Date: Wednesday, April 17, 2024
Time: 2:00 PM ET
Register Today >> https://bit.ly/HarvestStrategies2024
A long-term shift from single species management to science-based harvest strategies at the tuna regional fisheries management organizations (tRFMOs) is well underway. Recent years have seen governments agree to these pre-agreed management frameworks for major tuna fisheries, including bluefin, bigeye, and albacore tunas across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.
Harvest strategies help ensure sustainability of stocks, and in turn, stability of the seafood market. Now, it’s time for RFMOs to continue development for the rest of the major tunas and to begin adopting harvest strategies for some of the non-tunas, like swordfish, in their purview. Speakers include Dan Fu, Indian Ocean Tuna Commission Secretariat, Juan Valero, Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission Secretariat, Camille Manel, International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas Executive, Josie Tamate, Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission Chair, and Shana Miller, The Ocean Foundation International Fisheries Conservation project.

Potential trade barriers threaten Vietnam's US shrimp exports
Vietnamese shrimp exports to the U.S. declined in 2023, with challenges for Vietnamese exporters set to intensify further in 2024 due to an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) and the implementation of enhanced domestic protection measures pushed by the U.S. shrimp industry.
Shrimp exports to the U.S., Vietnam's top shrimp buyer, totaled USD 589 million (EUR 529.3 million) in the first 10 months ...

Chinese city’s plan to create Atlantic salmon farming hub met with skepticism
A Chinese city on the country’s east coast has outlined plans to construct a complete salmon industry value chain – from cage making to fry farming to processing – that has drawn skepticism on whether the city can pull off such an ambitious venture.
The plan, announced recently by the municipal government of Rizhao, involves an investment of nearly CNY 1 billion (USD 140 million, EUR 130 million) from Wanzefang Fishery Company to be used in constructing a research and development center, salmon-processing factories, deep-sea cages, and marine farms at an industrial park in the city.
Rizhao’s municipal government said ...

"It’s really the perfect fish" – New York Times article praises health benefits of salmon
The New York Times has confirmed all species of salmon contain valuable health benefits and that it is unnecessary for consumers to agonize over species selection when purchasing the fish, despite varied perceptions regarding the nutritional differences between wild-caught and farmed salmon.
The article, published in the newspaper’s 8 January edition, quoted researchers expounding on the health benefits that all species of salmon contain, highlighting that all types of salmon have lower environmental footprints compared to most other animal-based sources of protein.
“The focus is usually on ...

Tokyo-held industry workshop promotes electronic monitoring use in waters overseen by RFMOs
In an attempt to further the discussions held at 2023’s Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit (TSSS), an industry workshop took place after the event that aimed to get sweeping opinions on the merit of using electronic monitoring (EM) on vessels operating within the waters overseen by regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs).
The latest edition of TSSS, which took place in October of 2023, included talks on preventing labor abuse in the seafood supply chain, blue finance strategies, and actions the industry could take to limit illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Seeking to take advantage of the ...

Chilean President Gabriel Boric presents bill to replace controversial fisheries law
Chile President Gabriel Boric has signed a bill that seeks to replace the country’s highly contentious fisheries law, which Boric and others claim has allowed for instances of corruption in the nation’s fishing sector.
“The past, present, and future of our country is inextricably linked to the sea. We have to say it: The current fishing law has no legitimacy and does not meet the standards that democracy demands,” Boric said in a nationally televised speech. “Despite the fact that social organizations participated in good faith [in passing the current law], there were those who put their private interests above the common interest during its processing that left evidence of bribery and influence-peddling, which are unacceptable in legislative activity in a democracy. We need a new fisheries law for Chile – [one] that is fair … and ensures resource sustainability.”
Boric's call for a new national fisheries law hearkens back to his ...

Rabobank, GSA report finds Egyptian tilapia output on the path toward recovery
Egypt's tilapia sector is expected to post year-over-year growth in both 2023 and 2024, marking a positive shift from the stagnant output the North African country’s aquaculture sector has reported since 2020, according to a joint report from the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) and Rabobank.
Specifically, the report, which references data from the GSA and Dutch banking and financial services provider Rabobank, estimates Egyptian tilapia production to grow 6.2 percent in 2023 and will grow 5.2 percent in 2024.
Meanwhile, five other African tilapia-producing countries – Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe – will post combined estimated production growth of 15.6 percent in 2023 and 17.6 percent in 2024, according to the report.
This brighter outlook is largely due to ...

Irish aquatech sector draws investors, but output remains stagnant
Dublin, Ireland-based aquaculture technology company NanobOx has received a new round of funding to help it bring its innovative oxygenation technology to market and kickstart the country’s stagnant domestic aquaculture sector.
The fresh round of funding comes after the company already secured Series A funding of EUR 900,000 (USD 972,000) from a consortium of venture capital investors who have bought into NanobOx’s energy-efficient method of oxygenating aquaculture ponds. Specifically, NanobOx uses a low-voltage electric field to generate nanobubbles fed directly into a farm's water. The technology is currently undergoing trials at two Irish sites.
“Initial results show a 90 percent reduction in oxygenation energy costs compared to ...

Oceana Canada audit claims country has mismanaged fisheries over last seven years
Oceana Canada’s recently released “Fishery Audit 2023” claims the Canadian government and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Canada has made virtually no progress at rebuilding and maintaining the sustainability of its fishing stocks.
The report is the seventh time Oceana Canada has assessed Canada’s fisheries management, and in that time DFO and the Canadian government has made little progress, the organization said.
“Once again, less than a third of Canada’s marine fish and invertebrate populations can be considered healthy ...

The European Union has finalized bilateral and trilateral agreements with the United Kingdom and Norway, securing access to waters and fishing opportunities for next year.

Lower consumer confidence leads to seafood price-cutting in Chinese restaurants
Seafood purchases in China’s restaurant market are drying up as consumer demand dwindles.
Prices for staple mass market species including pangasius and snakehead are down an average of 20 percent year over year, as suppliers push to revive both consumer and restaurant demand.
China’s restaurant scene has seen an influx of new players in recent years, and heavier competition is also resulting in lower prices, according to Shanghai-based agrifood research agency Sitonia Consulting. This crowded market has led to price wars, and consumption data is showing the discounts have been successful in drawing in more customers. China’s restaurant spending has been one of a few high points in its Q4 economic data, with spending on catering rising 13.8 percent in October. However, the figures have shown Chinese consumers remain tightfisted when they do go out to eat.
Weaker consumer spending overall is heavily affecting suppliers of lower-value fish like pangasius, which has become ...
