A former insurer for Buoy Beer Company is suing the City of Astoria, Rickenbach Construction, Stricker Engineering and Columbia Dockworks for $9.5 million in damages from the 2022 partial collapse of the Buoy Beer Company’s waterfront building in Astoria.

The building, which collapsed in June 2022, began demolition this week.

The brewery, which partially collapsed in 2022 and experienced a second partial collapse in December, began demolition this week.

The new 250,000-square-foot manufacturing facility is designed to support the growing demand for cross-laminated timber as a sustainable construction material. The facility is estimated to produce an annual output of 100,000 cubic meters of finished cross-laminated timber, and is expected to create 100 manufacturing jobs at full capacity, which would make it among the largest cross-laminated timber facilities in the U.S.

The facility is set to open in 2027 and create 100 manufacturing jobs.

In February, NEXT Renewable Fuels Inc, under the operating company NXTClean Fuels, petitioned the Port of Columbia County to decrease its monthly rent from $108,497 to $15,000 in the wake of a boat crash that damaged the site's dock. The port's board is scheduled to vote on that petition March 13. But public records shared with Oregon Business show the company has been paying rent at that reduced rate since December.
