Episode 14 where we talk to Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt about why the fentanyl crisis needs more alternatives to genuinely help people and keep them out of jail and still make our streets more livable for all, how punitive sentencing just doesn't work, the role of the DA to shape policy and collaboratively problem solve, being a target of a fascistic former president and of an idiotic billboard campaign (and who really benefits from the latter), being a Blazers fan in a tough season, and so much more.

North Portlanders, please join me and Kip as we chat with almost all of the District 2 City Council candidates this Sunday, 2/4 at 4pm. The November 2024 election is going to completely change Portland politics, as we will have 3 City Councilors in each of the 4 new districts to represent us directly (instead of the old system, which left the councilors unaccountable). Join us and get a sense of who these people are who want to represent you!

Multnomah county has to do better.

Clackamas has it figured out.

For the second day in a row, Multnomah County has closed their offices, libraries and courts due to unsafe, icy conditions without re-opening their severe weather shelters.

We interviewed Jon Siebert from Blanchet House and Farm at the end of last year.

He was already explaining to us the surge in meals they have been serving and the urgent need for the city and county and agencies to get it together.

Blanchet House has been open feeding people and handing out supplies throughout this entire debacle of an ice storm.

Please take a listen. And support them however you can- including advocating for more funding for all the organizations serving the unhoused and housing first solutions with wrap around services. Which is the only way we get out of this never ending cycle of people suffering and dying on our streets.

Portland!

City commissioners think you've changed your mind on police oversight. They made multiple changes to the recommendations the police oversight commission that worked over 20 months to incorporate community input. Nearly all those that worked on the commission are rejecting the changes.

Tomorrow evening, Monday Dec 4, is your opportunity to weigh in (again) on the future of police oversight that you want to see.

Here is the Mercury's article about the changes.

And here's the details on how you can show up or sign up to provide input during the meeting tomorrow in person or remotely. The city will take feedback until Friday:

A police oversight measure approved by Portland voters was supposed to help restore police accountability and public trust, but some say a move by Portland City Council only threatens to erode public confidence. In 2020, 82 percent of Portland voters approved Measure 26-217, which called for a new,....

We thought it would be good to sit down without a guest this week and check in. We hash out the latest news, like the current City Council’s recent decision to gut the Independent Police Commission. Tim asks the tough question: why is Portland’s current government such a mess*?

We also put out the call to Mike Schmidt to come on the podcast…

*imperfectly- Kip had his info mostly correct. The excitement of doing this work unscripted!

Thank you for listening. We love you.

11/20/2023

This is why we need to completely reboot City Council. 82% of voters voted to create a Police Accountability Commission, and a citizen-led effort took 2 years to recommend how it would run and be independent. In one vote, City Council decimated the effectiveness of the Commission by putting a nominating board with police representation to be in charge of selecting those who serve on the committee.

This City Council does not reflect the will of the people of Portland.

A police oversight measure approved by Portland voters was supposed to help restore police accountability and public trust, but some say a move by Portland City Council only threatens to erode public confidence. In 2020, 82 percent of Portland voters approved Measure 26-217, which called for a new,....

New Episode is up! Episode 5: Chris Flanary, District 3 candidate!

Kip and Tim welcome Chris Flanary to the podcast. Chris is uniquely strong on the intricacies of housing policy in Portland, as they work for the city as a Housing Program Specialist. Chris’s platform is centered around Living Wages, (A) Safety Net, and Entrepreneurship. We get extra wonky into the wonkiness and its an exciting conversation. Please listen and share.

“When we criminalize existence, no one’s winning.”

“One of the things that I’ve learned in my time in both the non-profit world and government service for low income folks: The number one intervention for poverty is cash. Give people money, they will spend it wisely. I know it is very unpopular to think of just handing someone money and letting them do what they think is the right thing to do with it, but it is effective. And living wage is one way (to do that.)”
