Emerald Wavz "Spot Light"
Indie Artist Rap Reviews:Where are you guys from? What school did you go to? Who inspired you to pick up a pen?
Codeine from EW: 1. Im from Pensacola, Florida but i gre up in Aurora, Ohio. I went to Aurora High School and graduated in 2012. There are actually 3 people that made me want to pick up a pen. One was my cousin Phaze Jackson. He does R&B music in Cleveland and is an engineer as well. Ive always looked up to this man and hes one of my biggest influecers. Second would be Bryan Kelly, he gave me oppurtunity and believed in me. He pushed me like no one else would and I owe it to him. Finally the third person was Leon Hendon. He is also an artist in Cleveland and he would always criticed my work and make me do better. These people made me who I am in this industry.
Mikey from EW: I was born in Cleveland Ohio, raised in a small town suburb (odd I know). I went to Streetsboro City schools, but we had a lot of small town vibes. I started messing around with hip hop and rap due to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Ludacris, Nelly, OutKast, and UGK.
Fredo from EW:I was born in Chicago Illinois I was adopted by a family friend along with my 5 brothers and sisters. I graduated from nordonia hills school but resided in many cities in the northeast. I did poetry and show choir for many years but decided to start rapping after I heard Dax for the first time. And the boys also helped out as well also myself and my sister foreal.
Indie Artist Rap Reviews: how long y'all be recording together? I can tell by the synergy you guys love recording together.
Codeine From EW: Mikey Ray and I have been recording for 10 years. Emerald Wavz have been recording together for about 5 years.
Mikey from EW:I started freestyling at parties at 17 years old, started writing at 18. I started a group and brought Cody in around 2013-2014, and we had a real solid year behind us, with a solid resume. I then went on a solo journey after my group separated, then went on a 2-3 year hiatus, met up with Cody, worked through out our issues, and I became apart of his music group Emerald WavZ. The reason I love recording with this team, is because of the history behind the roots. The three of us together is a powerhouse that I refuse to let be denied.
Fredo from EW:I’ve only been rapping and recording with these guys going on a year and half. I’ve been with the Wavz for about 5 years. I actually was a dj hype man and a dancer for a company and how I got to the group was from my ex she kindly let him know I dance and I good energy. I had a week to review the music hit the stage open for bones thugs after the set we just clicked never looked back.
Indie Artist Rap Reviews: take me through the process of what it's like recording with you guys?
Codeine from EW: When we record we usually meet at Mikeys house. We get the beats together and the lyrics. We then do a routine before recording whether it be drinking or smoking. Sometimes it takes one take to record other times it takes a few takes but its a good time. The feeling of a finished project is amazing.
Mikey from EW:When we get together and record, it's honestly one of my favorite things to do. We have beats picked out for that session ahead of time. Meet up in my garage, smoke, drink, and vibe to the beat for a little bit. We keep the energy positive, and I believe you can hear and feel it in our finished projects. No one sounds the same in our group, and we all feed off each other.
Fredo from EW:The process inside the booth with Emerald WavZ is energy and patience but the big thing is equality. We'll process a game plan on a beat giving each artist a chance to come forward and express themselves in that moment.
While doing so the energy also coming up we vibe we laugh we work never rush it could take 30mins could take 72hours no matter what people will be impressed the team is unstoppable! The hype is big! The love is real! and we can always show better than we can tell you.
Indie Artist Rap Reviews: I notice you talk about existentialism (heaven or hell) a lot in your verses. Are you a believer? If so, what made you incorporate your beliefs in your secular music?
Codeine from EW:When it comes to existentialism, I believe in a higher up but I dont believe that someone makes our choices for us. Adding lyrics involving this topic brings other fans into listening to our music.
Mikey from EW:Heaven and hell to me, is something that can't be explained by one set of texts, beliefs, or traditions. So my music is something that can correlate between multiple audiences, and send the same message.... Be good, dream big, and have faith. At the end of the day, whatever you believe in, is right, provided that you be true yourself and your family, and that's what I portray in my music.
Fredo from EW:Yes I am huge believer! And what really got me to feed it was just the hard times man! Wanted to express myself when I had no one but didn’t want result in the chaos that surrounded me so I believed
He believed now I’m me and I speak for both when I express the meanings in my songs.
Indie Artist Rap Reviews: when is this project dropping?
Codeine from EW: this project is dropping the first quarter of next year (2024)
Mikey from EW: This project honestly has a release date of TBD.... I believe our goal is the first quarter of 2024, no later than March.
Fredo from EW:this project will be completed by first quarter of 2024…late January early February!
Ok now that we got the interview, let's get straight to the review!
Sounds like : Macklemore, Lil Dickey, Black Eyed Peas. Taylor gang, juicy J, Lil Jon ESB, 8 ball MJG
You can tell this crew has chemistry and they accelerate each other's craft.
The synergy is amazing.
The tight flow,, the confidence, their music is made for festivals and live performances.
"Video Girl" could literally be on A Netflix Movie Soundtrack. Very energetic track with a party atmosphere
I can picture my wife/ annoying me in a playful jeer around the room to "Ayo"
It's one of them tracks that your toddler would bounce to off the energy alone!
Takes me back to a time where them Dayton College Parties or them Northside Crandall Parties ...
"Big Bank Take Lil Bank"
This sounds like Wiz Khalifa meets Lil Jon and ESB. Whoever on the first verse is going insane.
This is an ode to yelawulf, mac miller,,and Taylor gang.
Im ready to pull out the 501 jeans and chuck Taylor's and twist a doobie to this.
"Lit" keeps the theme of this project homogenous. The party theme is alive and well.
Who ever is on the first verse adds some
Different content to a party atmosphere with the conversation of existentialism invited to a party atmosphere. In the midst of the turn up, you get a moment of your own mortality. That is different.
Everyone on this track is flipping their tongues.
It gives me a crime mob, insane clown posse, Taylor gang again.
I love the energy these brothas share with each other.
The hook is very catchy. The tune reminds you of Fetty wap.
"Woah"
The beat comes in with the 3-6 mafia memphis gangsta walk energy. I started to throw a Nike utility suit on and start gangsta walk on.
Woah is probably the single that should come off first. I hear yelawulf, juicy J and Lil white.
The swagger on each verse matches the beat.
Very impressive.
"Said I'll never make it"
Again the beat comes in with the bells and police scanner is fire.
"Walter white whippin up the recipe" lebotomy , get these demons out of me?
I appreciate the existential flow, very relevant.
Whoever that is rapping .. I can tell he got a good soul.
You guys really enjoy making music with each other. I would love to be a fly on the wall in the studio while y'all create. I know it's magic..
"Dreams" to rap the content you rapping is real 90s rap. I love the fact you keep substance on party tracks. I can respect it man. You can tell your influences by mjg and 8ball.
The hook is fire. Im ready to pledge my allegiance to the Wavz. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Beat selection : 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Concepts: 🔥🔥🔥
Replay value: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Lyricism: 🔥🔥🔥
Overall 🔥🔥🔥/🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That's right where you put a party album. This project is one that you put on for the vibes of a party atmosphere and just rock out!
