Analog for originality??
lets face it. Digital technology has done wonders in the way music is created and delivered within the last few decades. It has allowed budding Artists to conceptualize, create and present their vision or product with little money or resources. Great! right? Maybe not. Within music, the paradox of this progress is that it has allowed ANYONE who’s good with editing or programming, talented or not to achieve similar, polished results which, rightfully should belong to those with genuine talent and something to actually say. Music is art. Art has a feel, hue and a personality reflecting its creator! It used to be that you had to have something to say that no one else has said. A sound that no one else could make. I guess those “evil” Labels and Producers weren't so evil after all! They seemed to have served a very important purpose: Quality Control.
The idea behind American Recording Workshop is just that: a “Workshop” of sorts. A place for Musicians to come together with something to say and work on that “statement” until it is effective and easily understood by anyone who may listen. .........WITHOUT Auto-tune. Digital is wonderful in the context of storage, recall and effects/sound-shaping. I love it! but it shouldn’t be used in correcting a bad performance through sampling, looping or quantization (dehumanization). The “Song” is still key and with a genuine performance, the convenience of digital and the “larger-than-life” sound of high-quality analog gear your message will translate effectively to your masses!
