Haiti helped Eritrea gain independence by voting against a plan to split Eritrea between Ethiopia and Somalia in 1949:
After losing World War II, Italy gave up its colonies of Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia. A plan was then made to split Eritrea between Ethiopia and Somalia, with France and Britain taking over Libya.
Emile Saint-Lot, a Haitian delegate to the UN, voted against the plan despite orders from the Haitian president to vote in favor. This prevented the plan from passing, resulting in Eritrea and Libya gaining independence.
Haiti has been a source of political and inspirational influence on the African continent. The Haitian Revolution inspired uprisings and the establishment of Black-governed cities and towns in many places, including Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico, and the U.S.
