It's the night for your Yule Log, be it baked or burned.

At Around Here Magazine, we celebrate the seasons, and tonight is the Winter Solstice, which officially rings in the Winter! Tonight is the longest night of the year, and the solstice is official at 1:20am.

The Winter Solstice, or the December Solstice, is the point at which the path of the sun in the sky is farthest south. At the Winter Solstice, the sun travels the shortest path through the sky resulting in the day of the year with the least sunlight and therefore, the longest night.

This Scandinavian/Germanic tradition was adopted in the 1600's by Northern Europeans, burning the Yule log was believed to protect against evil spirits, illness, and negativity. The ashes, thought to be powerful, were often used to bless homes, fields, and livestock for fertility and protection.

It then mophed into a Yule Log cake by the french, The Yule log cake, or bûche de Noël, is a traditional Christmas dessert that symbolizes the Yule log that families would burn on Christmas Eve. The cake is a reinterpretation of the ancient tradition of burning the Yule log. The cake's origins are believed to be in France in the 19th century, when smaller hearths made it impractical to burn large logs indoors.
