The recent slate of elections on Nov. 2 shows Pennsylvania swinging back into the red after turning blue for Biden in the 2020 election. The state elected Republican candidates down the ballot, including state Supreme Court Justice-elect Kevin Brobson and Superior Court Judge-elect Megan Sullivan.

Pittsburgh, on the other hand, retained its Democratic leadership by electing Ed Gainey, continuing its streak without a Republican governor since 1936. A Pittsburgh native, Gainey grew up in South Oakland and East Liberty, and he has experienced the city’s complacency towards gentrification. His platform emphasized the importance of creating safe neighborhoods.

In other areas, Democrats did not perform as well, with Republican Glenn Youngkin unexpectedly winning in Virginia and New Jersey’s Democrat Phil Murphy not winning by as wide a margin as expected.
