🔥 THICKER WILDFIRE SMOKE RETURNS TODAY 🔥

Concentrations of wildfire smoke will return to the Commonwealth today, with higher concentrations denoted by the orange and red colors. This smoke is expected to remain mostly aloft with little to no surface smoke. Skies will likely look hazy this afternoon. This will also enhance the sunrises and sunsets- be on the lookout! 💨🔥

Good morning, happy Friday! While it will be Friday the 13th, the weather conditions will be far from scary with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s & 80s. Elevated smoke across northern PA may aide in smoky skies. Otherwise, a beautiful afternoon is to be expected. Stay tuned! ☀️

Wow! A surprise CME arrival between 4-6am this morning brought beautiful displays to the northern United States. This is a camera view from Maine, where you can view on https://www.neoc.com/webcam3/. A few lucky folks who were up this morning were able to even capture the Northern Lights here in Pennsylvania. As the sun enters the solar maximum part of its 11-year cycle, auroral displays will become more frequent for the next few years.

Unfortunately the solar storm appears to be weakening (of course, right on time for sunset)! There may be periods of aurora throughout the night but it is not a guarantee and does not appear to be the same magnitude as Europe experienced hours prior.

WAITING FOR NIGHT IN NORTH AMERICA…

A strong G3 geomagnetic storm is currently impacting the Earth with auroras heading down to VERY LOW geomagnetic latitudes, very similar to G4/G5 latitudes. This shows you that the geomagnetic storm category OR KP-index is not accurate for aurora viewing as conditions usually over-achieve. These are cameras coming out of Germany, which is similar to the geomagnetic latitude of the Carolinas!

If you want to see auroras this evening, we will need this storm to not lose intensity. If you want to capture any colors, look north right after sunset (best after 8:45-9pm).

Stay tuned to updates. Fingers crossed this storming lingers for us here in Pennsylvania! 🤞🏼🌌

🔥 THICKER WILDFIRE SMOKE RETURNS TOMORROW 🔥

Concentrations of wildfire smoke will return to the Commonwealth tonight into tomorrow, with higher concentrations denoted by the orange and red colors. This smoke is expected to remain mostly aloft with little to no surface smoke. Skies will likely look hazy. This will likely enhance the sunrises and sunsets- be on the lookout! 💨🔥

** POTENTIAL NORTHERN LIGHTS TONIGHT **

The Northern Lights may be visible for the entirety of Pennsylvania (on the horizion) later tonight and into the very early morning hours of Friday morning with potential solar storm conditions. Here is the cloud viewing forecast for tonight through the Friday morning hours.

Keep in mind, aurora forecasting is very difficult and it is not a guarantee it will occur again tonight. As of right now, a G3 solar storm is occuring and could continue to occur later this evening and into the overnight with a CME (coronal mass ejection) arrivial. These forecasts may be slightly under-done or over-done which will have an impact on the aurora viewing.

KEEP IN MIND... THE CME (coronal mass ejection) IMPACT WILL DETERMINE IF AURORAS WILL OR WILL NOT OCCUR TONIGHT. A DELAYED ARRIVAL OR NO ARRIVAL IS VERY MUCH POSSIBLE. SPACE WEATHER IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO PREDICT.

**Travelling long distances is not recommended (high risk, although high reward). **

To be able to see the auroras, you will need a good view of the northern horizion, away from heavy light pollution. Smartphone & digital cameras will best pick up on the Northern Lights. Your eyes will need to adjust to the dark for at least 30 minutes as well. The best timing will be AFTER 9:00 PM.

Stay tuned for updates!

🌌 SURPRISE AURORAS 🌌

A surprise aurora night show occurred between 4-6am early this morning with a G2 strength solar storm. Jan Haag of Jefferson County was fortunate enough to capture some of the pinks this morning. There will be another opportunity for auroras tonight. Stay tuned!

If you were up between 4-6am this morning, a surprise CME produced auroras! Was anyone up for it?

Good morning, happy Thursday! It will be another beautiful day with temperatures in the 70s & 80s under mostly sunny skies. Enjoy the sunshine and warmer days- the cloudy and cold days of winter are under 2 months away!

** NORTHERN LIGHTS POSSIBLE AGAIN **

Auroras may be visible across the state late Thursday evening into Friday morning. As of right now, the Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a forecast for a G2 (out of 5) solar storm strength with this CME arrivial. These forecasts may be under-done or over-done depending on the strength of the CME as it impacts Earth. Stay tuned to updates tomorrow- I will have a cloud viewing forecast in the morning. Stay tuned!

It is shaping up to be a fantastic weekend across the Commonwealth as the high pressure system hold strong across the region. Mostly sunny (minus high-level cirrus clouds) skies are expected with temperatures rising into the mid-80s for some areas. A bit on the warmer side to do a few last minute summer activities! ☀️ 😎

On this morning, 23 years ago, the crispy autumn air and clear skies dazzled over New York City. A hurricane, hundreds of miles off the eastern shore spun away. Also on this particular morning, 2,606 workers woke up for work, 246 people boarded flights, 343 fire fighters were preparing for their shift and 60 officers ready for patrol. All of these people never saw the light of day again by the late morning hours. Life is full of fleeting, uncertain, and impermanent moments. Enjoy every moment of everyday and life live to the fullest! Never Forget! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🏙️

Good morning, happy Wednesday! It will be a beautiful day with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. As we enjoy the amazing weather, we also remember a horrific day in American history. Never forget and spread kindess in all aspects of life! 🇺🇸 ☀️

AURORA UPDATE:

The CME (coronal mass ejection) arrival appears to be weaker than expected. Geomagnetic storm activity tonight is deemed unlikely (which is unfortunate with the clear skies). We will have another oppertunity Thursday night into early Friday morning. Stay tuned!

** SUMMER HEAT & DRY WEATHER RETURNS **

After a few cooler days, the above average temperatures and summer-like warmth will make a prolonged return, at least through the middle of the month. The CPC is projected above normal temperatures through September 23rd for the majority of the central and eastern US. High temperatures will likely climb into the 80s for many locations with some localized areas across southern PA may reach the upper-80s once again. Virtually little to no precipitation is expected as well, which may pose a risk for some drought revival. A more detailed outlook was posted on Patreon yesterday. Stay tuned to updates!

➡️ AURORA'S POSSIBLE TOMORROW NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 10TH ⬅️

🌌After reviewing the latest information and space weather data, it appears the chance for an aurora show tomorrow night is possible. The best conditions will occur after 9pm, once the entire sky settles dark after dusk. To be able to see these auroras, you will need to look north away from high light pollution areas.

➡️It is still not a 100% guarantee that auroras will occur tomorrow night, but the odds are looking decent with a moderate geomangetic storm expected. If you are travelling long distances to see these auroras, be prepared for disappointment.

☁️I will have a cloud viewing forecast later tomorrow morning, which is looking great. Stay tuned for that! If you have any questions, please link them below.

Auroras will be possible tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10th. As of right now, the SWPC is projecting a G2 strength storm. Stay tuned! ⚠️🌌
