Apparently, it's National Clean Off Your Desk Day, but don't fall for it! According to researchers at the University of Minnesota, people with cluttered desks come up with more creative ideas than people with neat ones. So save yourself some cleaning time and write that book instead!

Etienne Montgolfier, one of the brothers who launched the first successful hot air balloon, was born on January 7, 1745. In 1783, the brothers launched the first balloon carrying living passengers - a sheep, a rooster, and a duck. In eight minutes, the balloon traveled about two miles before landing safely after reaching an altitude of about 1,500 feet. You can read a whimsical fictional account of the event in Matt Phelan's delightful middle-grades book, THE SHEEP, THE ROOSTER, AND THE DUCK.

He and his brother, Wilhelm, published "Grimm's Fairy Tales" on Dec. 20, 1812. It's entirely possible that the Bronte sisters grew up reading these stories.

Novelist Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin and poet Percy Bysshe Shelley wed on December 30, 1816, after a two-year affair that scandalized most of England. They moved to Italy in 1818, the same year "Frankenstein" was published. Mary Shelley's name wouldn't appear in the book until 1821.

Westminster Abbey was consecrated on this day in 1065. Devoted to St. Peter the Apostle, it was built by Edward the Confessor, who didn't get to enjoy it very long. He died on January 5, 1066. His successor, William the Conqueror, was the first British monarch to be crowned at the abbey, which was rebuilt in its current Gothic style in the mid-13th century. This photo is from the UK trip the Sisters took this summer!
