Part two of our discussion on deconstruction is live. We continue the conversation offering hope for those who are ready to reconstruct. Although we offer no pat answers or simple solutions, we hope our stories demonstrate the value—and necessity—of moving away from forced religion and walking toward authentic faith. We see you.

Why has it taken us so long to record this topic? Who knows. But we do know the timing was right for both of us. In our usual fashion, we have a candid conversation about faith deconstruction and what that means…But we don’t stop there. We also offer insight, empathy, and hope for those finding their way forward, while also dismantling what needs to be left behind.

We wore damn cute silky robes too while doing it. Take a listen to Part 1 of 2.

“No man can tell me who I am and no man can tell me what my God thinks of me.”

This is truth. We are praying this anthem of truth, that Renee so beautifully and powerfully shared, over each of you, as well.

Our identities are glorious and our invitation to be with Him stands. No one gets to say otherwise. Period.

For more on this topic, and others, be sure to listen to our latest episode: Questions, But Also Answers.

As summer winds down, we thought it’d be fun to do a question and answer episode. You ask. We answer. Anything!

No question is too small or too big. Want to know about our first kiss? 💋 Who’s our celebrity crush? (You haven’t been listening if you don’t know Renee’s!)

What are our thoughts on Evangelicalism? Who inspires us? Where do we hope to be in 10 years? Is Jesus the only way? You know….anything.

So let’s hear it! Post your questions in the comments. Or if you’d like to remain anonymous 😎 DM us or ask in the question box in our stories.

We can’t wait to answer!

Thank you for your generosity of time and spirit in sounding off on body image for our 2-part series, Body insecurity, but also confidence.

Here’s what you want others to know about body image:

SLIDE 1: “No matter what you "achieve" (certain size/weigh/aesthetic), it will never be enough if the way you see yourself is broken”

“Telling me I am healthy if I am losing weight is the biggest LIE ever! Telling me I am healthy if I am losing weight is the biggest LIE ever!”

“I wish you could see what your body can DO, not just how it looks”

SLIDE 2: “It would be boring if we all looked alike! God made each uniquely beautiful”

“The standards other people set for your body image is void. Accept where you are and give yourself grace as you reach your goals. Patience.”

“Those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter (I need to hear this myself most days)”

SLIDE 3: “Our bodies are good and help us every day. They don't need to achieve anything to matter”

“Body health is nuanced. There are so many unknown variables about what a body look how it does”

“Ya never know why someone struggles with weight, acne, low muscle tone, etc. No shame”

SLIDE 4: “Don't laugh, but many Black men love thick girls and when I realized that, I realized that”

“Let women's bodies be theirs...stop the modest is hottest bullsh*t”

“ALL bodies are beautiful and taking care of your body is a way to love yourself”

SLIDE 5: “If you don't care, they don't care”

“Other people do not see your body the same way you see your body”

“No one else cares! Just worry about being healthy”

How about you? Add your thoughts, responses, and messages below!

Let’s talk body image! Love for our bodies often feels like a rollercoaster 🎢. Anyone else relate? We often move from loving her to seeing her as a frenemy to betraying her daily.

In perhaps our most raw and vulnerable episode, we discuss the topic of body image and how ours has shifted over the years. We discuss childhood messages, the media, purity culture, and abuse and how these ideas and traumas contributed to our view of their bodies, but also how we’ve grown to be more confident in their skin—and love themselves more.

We want to be allies with justice and liberty, not power. Jesus didn’t partner with power. He called power systems of the world to account. He challenged those who loved power more than people, who sat in ignorance more than love. Our hope is to do the same, and in doing so, let freedom ring for all people.

We acknowledge the both/and of enslaved African emancipation: Black communities can celebrate while White communities commemorate:

Maybe “commemoration” is a better word than “celebration” for white people to use when it comes to Juneteenth. They should certainly commemorate it, pause to acknowledge the historical importance of the day, but a pure celebration seems presumptuous. - Jemar Tisby

https://thewitnessbcc.com/why-black-and-white-people-should-commemorate-juneteenth-differently/

In junior high and high school whenever the teacher would assign a group project, typically only a couple of people in the group really did the work. The rest of the group found ways to extricate themselves from actually contributing to the project and simply celebrated when a good grade…

So, we were set to record our latest episode (on boundaries) last week, but it was also the day following the verdict for Derek Chauvin. Neither of us knew we would feel so heavy with the reality, relief, and sorrow of that verdict.

So after a phone call to process together, like we do, we decided to draw our own boundaries and postpone recording. Gotta honor those boundaries!

But in lieu of an episode this week we will be hosting our first ever Instalive! We are excited to talk shop and whatever’s on your mind: deconstruction, the patriarchy, purity culture, Tupac, Oprah. Nothing is off the table. We hope to see you there!

George Floyd, in his violent death, did not receive justice. But his murderer being held accountable for unjust actions is a holy moment, and we recognize and rejoice in this.

Our nation, especially the Church, now stands at the precipice of true change: will we decide collectively to continue advocating justice for all people, God’s image-bearers, to bring the kingdom of Heaven to earth?

We stand alongside those who are willing and say, “Come, Lord Jesus. Let your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”

[Image contents: a brown square within an oval-cutout photo of George Floyd at the center. Words at the top say, “Justice for George Floyd. Accountability for our actions.” Below the photo is a scripture from the Bible: “When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.” Proverbs‬ ‭21:15‬]

Listen, as much as we believe we are empowered to flex our female God-given muscles, we also have to remember that there is this kind of toxic, anti-Jesus teaching in the church.
We are no Biblical theologians, but many theologians easily point out the inerrancy of using the 1 Timothy 2:12 verse as the stand alone basis on why women “can’t teach.”
But, if you’d like to see what a healthy, vibrant church community that honors, empowers, and even expects women to teach and lead looks like—listen to our latest episode. Be reminded and catch a vision for what God is doing, has done, and wants to do...And someone give that man some scissors for his man bun.

Our latest episode has dropped! If you’ve ever wondered how we (Renee and Nicole) “do church” or what we mean when we say “organic church” you’ll want to listen.

In our usual fashion we challenge the thinking around mainstream Evangelicalism, but also honor and discuss the importance of the local church. And we push some buttons too, because well, it’s us. We hope to hear your thoughts and reactions!

https://www.notonlybut.com/episodes/traditional-church-but-also-organic

Renee and Nicole discuss their own personal church expression: organic church and how it's changed the way they think of "church." They talk pastors, leadership, raising up children, and the messiness of a life lived together.

NEW EPISODE! In a NOBA Podcast first, we are responding directly to a current event—the Atlanta shootings which took the lives of six Asian women. After hearing the arguments and excuses people were offering in order to defend or minimize such an atrocity, we decided to address each one point by point. Which means we talk about all the things and don’t hold back.
Recording this episode was especially difficult and emotional, but also healing in a way (in fact, Nicole happens to think it’s one of her favorite episodes to date). We hope you’ll listen and lend your perspective too. May we honor the truth and the victims in doing so.

NEW EPISODE! Diverse, But Also One.
Ahem, this episode is a doozy. We maybe said all the things you’re not supposed to say regarding diversity, or the lack thereof, within the church.

We ask: Who holds the power and why? What is biblical diversity? If the church is truly diverse who would that diversity include? What role does white supremacy play in this conversation? What false, or artificial, messages have we received around diversity? And we address gender, poverty, race, s*x, and singleness vs. marriage.

Like we said, we say allll the things. We hope you’ll listen and lend your thoughts on this important conversation.

Most us know how to pray, but sometimes we don’t stop to *hear.* In our latest episode, we talk about the act of not only praying, but also hearing and perceiving what God is doing.

Through personal stories, we discuss the unique, out-of-the-box, sometimes supernatural ways God speaks. Sometimes it’s through silence, sometimes it’s through others. And sometimes throwing up an angry prayer is also acceptable.

What are some of the coolest, weirdest, most astonishing ways God has spoken to YOU? We’d love to hear. {click the link to listen} https://www.notonlybut.com/episodes/praying-but-also-hearing
