We continue the “Summer of Prototypes” remembering the Grid:
Long-time enthusiast and engineer Ian Dawson, seen at the front of the car with the pit board, commissioned the Grid. It came from the pen of former Lotus Cars designer Geoff Aldridge. Giuseppe Risi, later an entrant of privateer Ferraris, was a partner in the enterprise. It was another of the early aluminum honeycomb monocoque chassis used in Group C, but like most of these concepts, the Grid suffered from excessive weight. The Grid S1's particular distinctive feature was its twin-boom front body surrounding the ground-effects tunnels. It had retired on its three previous appearances, but things began to turn around at Brands Hatch in 1982 with the team's first finish. The season finale also brought an infusion of funds from American Fred Stiff, whose limited driving experience nearly undid the effort. From Randy Leffingwell’s upcoming new book “Against All the Others: Porsche’s Racing History, Volume 1 - 1968,” he writes, “Ford of Great Britain had developed a 3.0-liter coupe, the P68, that was as lovely as it was fast. Len Bailey designed it; Alan Mann assembled it; a Ford-based Cosworth 3.0-liter grand prix engine powered it; and lack of reliability hampered it.” The engine developed 405hp for Formula 1, but team owner Mann de-tuned it to 385hp for endurance races. Continuing with our "Summer of Prototypes" theme, the 1985 1000 km was a soggy mess. All the European teams withdrew after 10 laps including the Joest Racing seen here, leaving the local Japanese entries like the March-Nissan to battle on for two hours before the race was stopped. This Summer and Fall David Bull Publishing releases will feature a lot of Group C and GTP, so we are celebrating with a ‘Summer of Prototypes ‘ on Instagram and Facebook. First up, when the World Endurance Championship traveled to Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in 1984, it was with just two teams, due to disagreements over travel fees. To fill out the grid, the promoter brought in touring cars, leading to the crazy sight of a car racing a Golf. The Legend.

author Neil Smith writes in his new book: “For a pre-teen sports car racing superfan, meeting Derek Bell and getting his autograph was one of the highlights of the day at the (1988) Silverstone 1000 km.” Decades later, DEREK BELL: Champion of Endurance bestowed another honor on Neil, by writing the Preface to "On The Prowl: The Definitive History of the Walkinshaw Jaguar Sports Car Team," available this Summer.
