The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast

The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast Greetings, friends and colleagues. Spanning 36 episodes and 5 movies, producer Michael Cox created a Sherlockian experience like no other.
(18)

And welcome to The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast page – devoted to revisiting and honoring the world’s greatest portrayal of the world’s greatest detective. From 1984 to 1994, Granada Television produced what is arguably the best (and most complete) depiction of legendary detective’s Adventures, Memoirs, Case-Books and many Returns. This podcast will examine that timeless series with a specific eye on Jeremy Brett in the role he was destined to immortalize.

Another Sign of Four birthday and actor to celebrate this month. This time it is the turn of Robin Hunter, aka Major Sholto, arguably the true villain of the story. A magnificent and experienced British actor, who brought gravitas to a smaller role. We remember Robin today, and salute him and his career.

This year we are not forgetting to celebrate Lady Eva Blackwell's birthday. Otherwise known as the beautiful actor Serena Gordon, she turns another year older. Our gallantry prevents us from naming a precise year, she's been through enough already having to deal with the odious Milverton. A tremendous performer, we sure you will all agree, and we hope she has a most pleasant day.

As you all know, sadly, David Stuart Davies passed away last month. About 2 years ago, we did an interview with him. He was always very high up in our list of people we wanted to interview because he knew so much. He's the expert, we're just fans. From the moment we contacted him asking if he'd be willing to speak to us, he couldn't have been more encouraging and open to helping us in any way he could.

We often get praise for our interviews, but truly, the best ones are from those who want to talk and are enthusaistic about the subject. David was one of those, and he was articulate, open and honest in a charming and polite way. He was the true definiton of a raconteur. To be in his company, virtually or in person, was enrapturing and he made it all look so easy.

Last year, he had the relaunch of Bending the Willow at the BFI and was generous again allowing David to be a part of the event, and giving yet more of his time to us. He also gave us a signed copy to give away to our listeners. It bares saying that he didn't have to do any of this. In seeing so many tributes to David these last few days, its clear to see what a giving man he was, and we can attest to that.

We had approached David to appear at Brettcon and we had hoped to speak to him again at some point, but alas it was not meant to be. We know he would have been there if he could, and all three of us thought of him that day, and wished he could be part of the festivities as he so deserved to be.

For a man who didn't appear in the series, he has left a truly remarkable imprint on those of us who love it. He is as synonomous with it as any. Bending the Willow is the definitive book on the series, and the first one we go to when doing research, and we really can't recommend it enough, as we have said from the very beginning.

We hope you will all go to this website and donate to the Kirkwood Hospice who looked after David - https://david-stuart-davies.muchloved.com/

You can also purchase Bending the Willow, the newest updated version here: https://www.lulu.com/shop/david-stuart-davies/bending-the-willow-jeremy-brett-as-sherlock-holmes/hardcover/product-vdvvmw.html?q=bending+the+willow&page=1&pageSize=4

In closing, we leave a video David happily did for the winner of the signed book he gave us, listener Brian Weaver. This is how we will remember him, a glass in his hand, a twinkle in his eye, and a smile on his face, pleasing people. Cheers to you, David!

It's been just over a year since we lost Gayle Hunnicutt, and we thought we'd repost our tribute from last year as a mark of respect and rememberance.

We're extremely sorry to hear that Gayle Hunnicutt, Irene Adler in A Scandal in Bohemia, has passed away at the age of 80. She brought not only her beauty, but an enigmatic charisma, strength, Southern charm and an instant chemistry with Jeremy that kicked this series off in the most astounding way. Gayle lit up the screen and was the perfect choice to play the one woman who captivated Sherlock Holmes like no other, as she captivated every viewer like no other. We feel she should be given so much credit for being a huge part of so many fans favourite episode, and no doubt, ensuring viewers would be returning the following week and beyond. Her unforgettable performance and the love we all still have for her is testament of that. She also captivated her friends, colleagues and those around her. The stories from everyone who worked with her is of a true lady, who showed kindness and respect to everyone and who was charm personified. We had a little interaction with her within in the last year but alas she was never well enough to join us on the show. However, we celebrate her life and career today, and for all the joy, entertainment and love she brought us fans of this show. Our thoughts and prayers are, of course, with her friends and family at this time.

Gayle, you are and will forever be, THE woman. Thank you.

A day late on this one unfortunately, but we still wanted to recognise Emrys Jones, Detective Athelney Jones in The Sign of Four, who would have turned 96 on the 1st of this month. A memorable performance, jousting with Holmes as to who was the superior detective, and we all know who won that one. Thank you Emrys, for providing such enjoyment and pleasure to all of us, across all these years.

Sad news has just come in that dear David Stuart Davies has passed away after a short illness. We interviewed him about 3 years ago because we admired him so much, and all that he had done for the Granada show. He was an expert on Sherlock Holmes and Jeremy, we can only wish to be, but more than that he was a gentleman and a scholar the likes of which are too rare nowadays.

Please go to this web site, a tribute to Mr Davies which has been set up to honour this astounding man - https://david-stuart-davies.muchloved.com/

We'll post a fuller tribute in a few days, but our heart goes out to his wife, family, friends and all that knew him at this time. Thank you David for all you gave to our community, to Jeremy and to the world of Sherlock Holmes. You shall never be forgotten.

Dedicated with love to David Stuart Davies

Today is Our Mycroft's Birthday. Charles Gray would have been 96 and is sorely, sorely missed. A magnificent actor whose career spanned many decades and many genres. We love and admire him, and for us he is THE Mycroft (honourable mention to Stephen Fry). So, right now, we raise a very large glass to this man and his superb sideburns and thank him.

Today we remember Bernard Atha CBE, Dr Carthew from The Dancing Men. Bernard lived to be 94, and passed away only a couple of years ago, having gone into politics. But we remember him and for his role at Ridlingthorpe Manor, assisting Holmes in his investigation.

Looking back on our old shows has got us thinking....when and how did you guys find us? What made you listen to us? We're so lucky to have so many people listen to what we do, and even flying from all over the world to be at an event we put on, especially with the 3 hour long episodes and months in between each one. So, let us know what led you to our little corner of on demand audio, enquiring minds want to know!

Today we remember the fabulous Peter Wyngarde, Langdale Pike in The Three Gables. His age is somewhat of a mystery, but some sources claim he would be 97 today. Sadly leaving us 6 years ago, he will forever be remembered as one of the most iconic actors of all time and he is one of our all time favourites.

We remember legendary UK actress Pateince Collier today, on her 114th Birthday. Playing the imposing Miss Stoper in The Copper Beeches, we hope, was far from her own personality. In fact, we're sure as it is a great performance. Thank you Ms. Collier!

We remember Contable MacPherson today, aka the Scottish actor Sean Scanlon, on what would have been his 76th Birthday. Taken from us too soon, his work lives on, and what a part he had in the show, arguably the key character to solving the crime. We look up and thank him for his contributions.

We remember the odious Baron Gruner, better known as Anthony Valentine, today on what would have been his 85th Birthday. A marvellous villain opposing Holmes, we can not wait to talk about this episode and this wonderful actor.

Happy 90th Birthday to the marvellous Vernon Dobtcheff, who played Herr Mendelstam in The Six Napoleons. An experienced actor of over 380 acting credits (!) according to IMDB, and still working, and "the Patron Saint of professional acting" according to another Sherlock Holmes actor, Rupert Everett. We hope he has a lovely day!

Happy Birthday to the sadly missed Barbara Hicks, Emily Garrideb in The Mazarin Stone, who would have been 100 today. One of the highlight performances from that episode, one that always puts a smile on our face. We raise a toast to her memory.

Actor, Writer and, as we know him, Director and Friend of the show, John Gorrie, turns an incredible 92 today. Still full of life, as everyone saw at Brettcon, we hope to be like him if we reach that age!

Although he only directed one episode, The Bruce-Partington Plans, we still thank him for such a brilliant episode, and wish him many happy returns on this day.

Thought we'd share this again from last year...

We were recently sent this by one of our very talented listeners Mr Bill Wood, who has kindly allowed us to share it with you. As you can see Bill in an extremely skilled artist who has captured many of the character from the series so brilliantly. He even suggests there's an Easter Egg or two hidden in the picture.

If you'd like to know more, then you can find Bill on Instagram and Threads at his website is www.heyimbill.co

A Happy Birthday goes to both George Costigan and Keith Barron today.

George, who played Wilson Kemp in The Greek Interpreter, turns 77. Still seen on UK screens frequently, and always a tremendous actor, such as in recent hit Line of Duty. We hope he has a well deserved fantastic day.

Keith, Robert Ferguson in The Last Vampyre, is sadly no longer with us, having passed away just a few years ago. An instantly recognisable actor, having nearly 200 credits to his name, his work is still thoroughly enjoyed to this day and we remember him on what would have been his 90th Birthday.

We remember and say Happy Birthday today, to the best friend on and off screen, Jeremy and Sherlock could have asked for, Edward Hardwicke, on what would have been his 92nd Birthday. Although he left us some twelve or so years ago, we admire, adore and thank him for his incredible contributions to the show. Today is not a day to be mournful of his loss, but to be happy and grateful for all he gave us. To paraphrase his wife Prim from our interview with her, what a joy it is to be able to put an episode on and see Ted so happy and so well. Ted, cheers to you, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Three Birthdays today, from some wonderful actors.

Frank Finlay, sadly no longer with us, would have been 98 today. A wonderful Professor Coram in The Golden Pince-Nez, and a hugely prolific and well beloved actor, we take a moment today to remember him.

Renowned theatre actor, Professor of Understanding and friend of the show, Jack Klaff, turns 73 today. A huge man, both physically and in personality, we were honoured to have been able to host him at Brettcon. Still working prominently in the UK, we send our very best wishes of the day to him.

Captain Croker, aka Oliver Tobias, becomes 77 today. One of our favourite guest roles in the series, commanding, debonair and entirely believable, we say "Happy Birthday Oliver."

Two Birthdays to celebrate today.

Firstly, Alan Howard, The Duke of Holdernesse in The Priory School, would have turned 87 today. A fabulous, memorable, stern faced performance, full of authority and nobility, yet fatherly and caring. He is much missed by many, but his astounding list of credits is still enjoyed by all.

Nicholas Field, Harold Latimer in The Greek Interpreter, turns 76 today. Sadly, his appearance in the show was his last credited role, however, wherever he is and whatever he is doing, we hope he has a wonderful day.

We would like to wish our friend, Kristoffer Tabori, a very big Happy Birthday as he turns 72. Fortunately for him there, we don't think the Demon Hound will be able to reach him in The Philippines, so he should be able to rest easy and have a great time.

Those who were at Brettcon will have seen how warm and gregarious he is, and as intelligent and thoughtful and encouraging of this entire fan base as anyone. We were honoured to have been able to have at the event but also to have been able to speak to him in our most recent podcasts covering The Hound - links below! We hope he has a wonderful day, as he truly deserves it.

Two Birthdays today for two performances that may have gone unnoticed.

Yves Beneyton, aka Eduardo Lucas from The Second Stain, turns 78. Playing a man with a bad reputations, Yves is a man of superb reputation, performing sublimely on both sides of the Channel. We hope he has a great day.

Shaughan Seymour, aka Penrose Fitcher in The Dying Detective, turns 75. We hope his day is free from any tropical diseases and troublesome consulting detectives, and thank you for his contribution to the series.

We are day late on this but nonetheless, we wish a Happy 92nd Birthday to Mr Norman Bowler, who played the ill fated Owen Tregennis in The Devil's Foot. Whether playing a game of whist or foaming round the mouth after being introduced to some of the deadly root, we enjoyed Norman's performance, and hope he has a wonderful day today!
