Phil Collins is 73 today!

In 1970 Collins answered a newspaper ad for a band named Genesis who needed a drummer and backup vocalist. However, Collins more notably made a name for himself after replacing Peter Gabriel as the face of the band in 1975.

Collins experienced much commercial success with Genesis. In 1978 they released And Then There Were Three. The album went gold and secured the group its first American radio hit, "Follow You Follow Me."

Collins branched out to experience solo success in 1981 when he released his first solo record, Face Value. And in 1982 he released his second solo album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which included the popular singles "You Can't Hurry Love" and "I Don't Care Anymore."

In 1984, he created the title song for the film soundtrack to Against All Odds. This No. 1 single scored Collins Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song.

He continued performing throughout the 80s and 90s and officially announced his retirement from music in 2011. Collins experienced health issues that included spinal problems which hindered his ability to play drums.

You can still enjoy all the Phil Collins and Genesis hits on Oldies XL! OldiesXL.com OR download our FREE mobile app to listen!

Happy Birthday Etta James!

Her gospel-style music and iconic soulful voice have made her quite the household name. Songs such as "I'd Rather Go Blind" and " At Last" made her a Grammy Award winner several times and earned her a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

A talented singer since she was 5 years old, Etta James had her big break in the 1960s when she signed with Chicago's Chess Records. She made such chart-toppers as "All I Could Do Was Cry," "At Last" and "Trust in Me."

She eventually earned her first Grammy nomination in 1973 for her album Etta James. After Chess Records, she signed with Warner Brothers Records where she made such albums as Deep In The Night and Seven Year Itch.

She continued to perform throughout the 90s and early 2000s producing more albums and performing live for her adoring fans. Her final album, The Dreamer, was released in 2011.

She passed away shortly after in 2012 due to the effects of leukemia, hepatitis C, and dementia.

Her music is still appreciated by millions today and her powerful voice has made her a true icon to the music world. Come and enjoy more music from Etta James and more artists of the 60s, 70s, & 80s on Oldies XL!

Happy Birthday to soul and pop artist Sam Cooke!

His career began as a teen when he started his own quintet called the Highway QCs. Then, in 1948, Sam Cooke joined the popular gospel group the Soul Stirrers. After 6 years with the group, he began to branch out and he released his first single "Loveable" in 1957.

In 1957 Cooke also released "You Send Me." The song was so popular that it surpassed Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock" on the music charts!!

During the late 50s and though the 60s, along with starting his own publishing company for his music, Cooke continued to dazzle his fans with hits like "Wonderful World", "Twistin' the Night Away", and "Another Saturday Night."

Tragically, Cooke died on December 11, 1964, following an altercation with a motel manager.

The musical legacy of Sam Cooke is still celebrated today and you can hear it all on Oldies XL! We are playing all your favorite music of the 60s, 70s & 80s!

Following Monday’s wild-card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Eagles center, Jason Kelce, reportedly told his teammates in the locker room of his decision to retire.

Kelce was visually upset watching his team lose to the Buccaneers Monday night with a final score of 32-9. However, he leaves his NFL career a legend in Philadelphia.

In 2011 he was a sixth-round selection for the Philadelphia Eagles. Throughout his career, he played 2 Super Bowl games securing a win for the city in 2018.

57 years ago today, the iconic "Purple Haze" was recorded in London by the Jimi Hendrix Experience at De Lane Lea studios. The song was inspired by a dream Hendrix had where he was walking under the sea.

On January 9, 1979, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) staged a concert fundraiser featuring dozens of '70s pop music icons.

Designed to publicize the organization's proclamation of 1979 as the “International Year of the Child” the event called attention to the poverty, malnutrition, and lack of access to quality education affecting millions of children throughout the developing world.

The concert took place in New York City and was broadcast worldwide as “The Music for UNICEF Concert: A Gift of Song.”

The concert organizers asked all participating stars to donate to UNICEF the royalties from the song they performed during the show. The featured acts included Rod Stewart, The Bee Gees, Earth Wind and Fire, ABBA, and Donna Summer among others.

While it is unclear whether or not all the acts donated their royalties for the songs performed, The Bee Gees(who were primary organizers of the event) did donate the royalties for their song “Too Much Heaven.” The song became a #1 pop hit and raised more than $7 million for the charitable programs of UNICEF.

Happy Birthday to The King himself, Elvis Presley!!

In 1953 Sam Phillips took Elvis under his wing and got the young musician touring. He released his first single “That’s All Right" in 1954 and the rest is history!!

His unusual musical style, provocative gyrating hips, and good looks quickly earned him a loyal following of young fans.

In 1956 he had his first No. 1 single “Heartbreak Hotel,” as well as his first No. 1 album, Elvis Presley. That same year he also signed a movie contract with Paramount Pictures.

Elvis went on to have many more hits including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “All Shook Up,” “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear,” and “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”

He also continued to star in several films as well such as Blue Hawaii (1961), Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), and Viva Las Vegas (1964.)

He performed until his final days, his last concert taking place in June 1977, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

On the morning of August 16, 1977, Presley died of heart failure at the age of 42. An estimated 18,000 people with signs, flowers, and memorabilia lined Elvis Presley Boulevard in Memphis to catch a glimpse of his funeral procession on August 18.

His music stands the test of time and his loyal fan base continues to grow and evolve. His role in rock and roll history continue to make Elvis a household name.

While ordinary radio may not give Elvis the attention he deserves, Oldies XL has all the best music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s including several Elvis hits!!

Happy Birthday to the late David Bowie! Bowie would have been 77 years old today.

Bowies first hit came in 1969 with the song "Space Oddity." Shortly after in 1970, he released the album Man Who Sold the World followed by 1971s Hunky Dory.

Ziggy Stardust, Bowies alter-ego, was introduced during his 1972 album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

He continued to make music throughout the 1970s and 1980s with variations of style, genre, and persona. Eventually he began acting when he initially landed the title role in The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976.

In 1980, Bowie starred on Broadway in The Elephant Man and in 1986, he starred as Jareth, the Goblin King, in the fantasy-adventure film Labyrinth.

Bowie continued to act and make music throughout the 80s, 90s and 2000s. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. And he released his final album, Blackstar, on January 8, 2016.

Following a long battle with cancer Bowie passed on January 10, 2016. His music will not soon be forgotten and his contribution to the music world was nothing short of revolutionary.
