Every Artist Wants a Manager Until They Realize a Good One Won’t Just Say ‘Yes’ to Everything

Let’s keep it real for a second. Every artist dreams of having a manager. Whether you’re a rapper, singer, producer, or any kind of creative, the idea of someone handling the business side while you focus on your craft sounds like the ultimate win. But here’s the truth that hit me like a ton of bricks: *“Every artist wants a manager until they realize a good one won’t just say ‘yes’ to everything.”*

Y’all, this statement is GOLD. It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, and I had to share it with you. Let’s break it down.

💪🏾The Dream vs. The Reality
When you’re starting out, you imagine your manager as your ultimate hype person—someone who’s always in your corner, agreeing with every idea, and making things happen with a snap of their fingers. But here’s the thing: a manager who only says “yes” isn’t doing their job. In fact, they’re probably setting you up for failure.

A good manager isn’t just a “yes man.” 😜They’re a strategist, a negotiator, and sometimes, a reality check. They’re there to guide your career, not just to rubber-stamp every decision you make. If your manager is always saying “yes,” chances are they’re either inexperienced, afraid to lose you as a client, or just not invested in your long-term success.

💯 The Hard Truths a Good Manager Will Tell You
Let’s be honest—no one likes hearing “no.” But sometimes, “no” is exactly what you need to hear. A great manager will challenge you. They’ll tell you when your idea isn’t ready, when a deal isn’t in your best interest, or when you need to put in more work before taking the next step. These conversations might be uncomfortable, but they’re necessary.

For example: 👇🏾
👉🏾“No, you’re not ready for that big festival yet.”
👉🏾“No, that collaboration doesn’t align with your brand.”
👉🏾“No, you can’t drop that track—it needs more work.”

These “no’s” might sting at the moment, but they’re coming from a place of care and expertise. A good manager is thinking about your career five years from now, not just the next five minutes.

👂🏾Why a Manager Who Says “No” Is Worth Their Weight in Gold
When a manager says “no,” it’s not about shutting you down-it’s about building you up. They’re protecting your brand, your reputation, and your future opportunities. They’re helping you avoid costly mistakes and guiding you toward decisions that will actually move the needle in your career.

💭🤔Think about it: would you rather have a manager who lets you sign a bad deal just to keep you happy or one who fights to get you the best terms possible, even if it means delaying the process? The answer is obvious.

🫂 The Artist-Manager Relationship: It’s a Partnership
At the end of the day, the relationship between an artist and their manager is a partnership. It’s built on trust, communication, and a shared vision for success. If you’re an artist, it’s important to remember that your manager’s job isn’t to blindly support every idea-it’s to help you make the best decisions for your career.

And if you’re out there looking for a manager, don’t just settle for someone who tells you what you want to hear. Look for someone who challenges you, who pushes you to be better, and who has the guts to say “no” when it matters.

What do you think? Have you ever had a manager who wasn’t afraid to say “no”? Drop your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear your stories!

Trending Talent, Bigger Paychecks: The 2024 Shift That Changed Everything!
A Shift Towards Merit-Based Bookings ...

2024 was a groundbreaking year for the entertainment industry, especially when it came to how show promoters approached booking artists for events. For years, the norm was to rely on the "OGs" – the big names with established careers – regardless of whether they had current hits or not. This often left out the young, talented artists who were making waves with trending songs but were overlooked for the main stages. Instead, these rising stars were relegated to opening acts, often underpaid and undervalued, despite having the songs that were on everyone's lips.

This outdated approach was not only frustrating for the artists but also stunted the growth of the industry. Imagine having a song that’s dominating the airwaves, trending on social media, and being played at every party, yet not being able to cash out on its success because promoters prioritized big names over current relevance. It was a system that rewarded legacy over merit, leaving many talented artists feeling sidelined and demotivated.

Thankfully, 2024 saw a significant shift in this narrative. A new wave of promoters emerged, ones who recognized the value of booking artists based on merit and current impact rather than just name recognition. These promoters understood that the industry thrives when fresh talent is given the platform they deserve. Artists like Lazani Bakitenno Incredible JJ, Boii, and many others were finally given the spotlight they earned, headlining events and being paid what they were worth.

This change was more than just a win for the artists; it was a win for the industry as a whole. These young acts didn’t just bring their trending hits to the stage – they delivered electrifying performances that drew crowds, energized audiences, and left everyone with unforgettable experiences. By giving these artists the recognition and compensation they deserved, promoters not only motivated them to keep pushing but also ensured that the industry remained dynamic and relevant.

So, today, we want to big up all the promoters who are changing the game and prioritizing merit-based bookings. You’re not just giving these artists a platform; you’re inspiring them to keep creating, performing, and pushing boundaries. You’re showing them that their hard work and talent matter, and that’s a powerful message.

As this year, 2025 moves, we hope to see even more of this positive change. Let’s continue to celebrate the artists who are making waves, delivering great performances, and putting smiles on people’s faces. Here’s to stacking the paper, breaking barriers, and keeping the industry alive and thriving!

Shoutout to all the promoters and artists making it happen – the future is bright, and we’re here for it!

How Can You Be Nominated for a Grammy Without Submitting? The Blind Leading the Blind in Sierra Leone’s Music Industry 🙈

Yo, fam! Abuzzy here, and today we’re diving into a topic that’s been buzzing in the Sierra Leone music scene. I’ve seen some so-called “big artist” posting about their Grammy dreams, but here’s the tea: How can you be nominated for a Grammy without even submitting your work? Let’s break it down and talk about why this mindset is holding our industry back.

👉🏾The Grammy Dream vs. The Grammy Process 👇🏾

First things first, let’s get one thing straight: you can’t win a Grammy if you don’t submit your work for consideration. The Recording Academy doesn’t just magically pick artists out of thin air. There’s a whole submission process that artists, their teams, or record labels have to go through. Your music has to be released during the eligibility period, and you’ve got to fill out the proper forms, pay the fees, and meet all the requirements.

But here’s the kicker: some of our so-called “big artists” in Salone don’t even know this. They’re out here posting on social media and rapping, talking about how they’re gonna win a Grammy “someday,” but they haven’t even taken the first step. Like, bruh, how you gonna win a race you didn’t even enter? 😂 Man's must be Robinho D Comedian 😂

👉🏾The Blind Leading the Blind👇🏾

This is where it gets frustrating. These “big artists” are supposed to be the ones leading the way, right? They’re supposed to show the new cats how it’s done. But instead, they’re out here clueless, leading the next generation straight into a ditch.

You’ve got young artists looking up to these guys, thinking they’re following the right path, only to realize later that their mentors don’t even know the basics. It’s like the blind leading the blind, and it’s one of the main reasons our industry isn’t progressing like it should.

While other African countries are making global waves, Sierra Leone is stuck in the same old cycle. Why? Because the people who are supposed to be leading the charge are too busy dreaming instead of doing.
Do you think Ghana's Rocky Dawuni gets his 4 nominations without submitting? 😂 He's the highest Grammy-nominated artist from Ghana, you might not know him but he knows what's the deal

👉🏾Drizilik : Breaking the Cycle👇🏾

Now, let’s talk about someone who’s doing it right: Drizilik. This guy is young, but he’s got a clear vision. He knows that following the so-called “big artists” will only lead him down a dead-end road. Instead, he’s focused on understanding the industry, building his brand, and creating quality music that resonates globally.

Drizilik’s success is proof that you don’t have to follow the crowd to make it. He’s not waiting for someone to hand him a Grammy nomination; he’s putting in the work to make it happen. And that’s why he’s a threat to the status quo. He’s showing everyone that there’s a better way, and it starts with knowledge and hard work.

👉🏾What Needs to Change?👇🏾

If we want to see real progress in Sierra Leone’s music industry, we need a major mindset shift. Here’s what needs to happen:

👍🏾1. Educate Yourself: Artists, especially the established ones, need to take the time to learn about the industry. Understand how award submissions work, how to market your music globally, and how to build a sustainable career.

👌🏾2. Mentor the Next Generation: Instead of leading blindly, our “big artists” should be guiding the younger generation. Share your knowledge, teach them the ropes, and help them avoid the mistakes you’ve made.

👏🏾3. Industry Support: Record labels, producers, and promoters need to step up. Create platforms for artists to learn about the business side of music. Host workshops, bring in experts, and provide resources that can help artists grow.

🚧4. Stop the Empty Talk: It’s time to stop posting about Grammy dreams and start taking action. If you want to win, you’ve got to put in the work. Period.

At the end of the day, dreaming big is great, but dreams without action are just fantasies. Sierra Leone’s music industry has so much potential, but we’re being held back by a lack of knowledge and leadership. Artists like Drizilik are showing us the way, but it’s up to the rest of us to follow suit.

So, to all the artists out there: stop waiting for a miracle and start putting in the work. And to the fans: demand more from your favorite artists. Let’s push for an industry that’s not just about dreams but about real, tangible progress.

What do you think? Drop your thoughts in the comments below, and let’s keep this conversation going. Until next time, this is Abuzzy signing off. Peace! ✌️ R Dae na Doe 😂
