Repost from

I think it’s becoming less “popular” to publicly admit when a writer’s work intimidates you. Especially when you’re surrounded by readers all the time. The “omg you haven’t read that?!” can be overwhelming when they’re classics you’re aware of, but just haven’t gotten to.

That’s how I kind of still feel about Toni Morrison’s work. I own almost everything she’s written but they sit on a shelf I don’t reach toward very often. I’m not sure why I picked up Sula, but I did and I was ready this time.

It’s an extremely touching novel about friendship, womanhood, love, and rebellion. I think it’s one of her more straightforward works, it didn’t take me much effort to fall into and begin picturing everything happening in their neighborhood, in the city of Medallion, Ohio. Sula and Nel were always thick as thieves, until marriage and adulthood began to change their relationship. Nel goes the traditional route and is accepted in her community and Sula choses to leave and experience college and the city life. When Sula returns, she stirs up drama in the community and ends up forcing both of them to have to face the consequences of their choices.

Highly recommend this once and I’m already excited about the inevitable reread.

“It took ten drafts, four years, and my editor twice talking me out of quitting because the work of quarrying and querying one’s interior self carries enormous emotional cost and risk.”

💫 What I read for … 💫

It's impossible to rank these books, so I’ve highlighted my favorites by category instead. If 70 books by Asian women seems excessive to have read in one year, consider it me slaking my thirst after decades of drought. More, more, I will always need more! These books give me life and have helped chip away at the centrality and normativity of white Western European culture that I’ve unconsciously absorbed from our society.

Please follow the hashtag for other bookstagrammers’ year-end round-ups and to discover new recommendations. I’d love for you to join us on another year of reading books by Asian women in 2023!

With so much gratitude,

Kristin.

Happy New Year!

Sharing this list of the best historical fiction of 2022 from

“So let’s just say these 10 historical novels, arranged in alphabetical order, are the ones that ranked highest in my personal triage. Some are easy reads, others are more demanding. All seem to me to have lasting appeal — a pretty safe bet, since three of the 10 authors (Gurnah, Tokarczuk and Pamuk) are Nobel laureates.”
