Patient: 2007 Lexus LS460 | 244,607 miles
Automotive Physician: ASE-Certified Master Technician Jonny Barrs
Symptom(s): Vehicle Ck-Engine light on…erratic starting…worse when cold.
Diagnosis: Road test vehicle, monitor onboard computer systems, found code P0335 crankshaft position sensor 'a' circuit. P1340 camshaft position sensor 'a' (bank 1 sensor 2).
Treatment: Performed camshaft and crankshaft sensor test / check power and ground to each sensor…located weak signal to sensor. Replaced sensors. Road tested. Engine ran perfectly.
Result: Vehicle returned several days later with ck-engine light back on and slow-to-start-when-cold complaint. After ongoing tests and wave form readouts, it was determined the right-bank cam sensor was erratic. Ultimately, Jonny found the aluminum cam cover had oxidized (corroded) over time in a tiny area under the sensor itself between the sensor's plug-in-hole in the cover and its retainer bolt. Tightening the sensor’s retainer bolt caused erratic operation…but not every time. However, when trying to cold-start the engine, it failed for about 20 attempts then started…ck-engine light back on. By monitoring wave form operations real-time and mechanically loosening- then-tightening the sensor retainer bolt, the wave pattern would change. The culprit was a small barnacle-shaped “hump” under the sensor on the cam cover between the cam sensor plug-in area…and the retainer bolt holding it in place. When the bolt was tightened, the

Patient: 2006 F-250 Super Duty Ford Diesel 6.0 | 161,171 miles
Automotive Physician: ASE-Certified Master Technician Jonny Barrs
Symptom(s): 6.0 diesel engine hard hot starts and extended crank times
Diagnosis: Performed multiple scan tool readouts. Test results showed insufficient high oil pressure for start cycle engagement (less than 325 psi during cranking when engine hot).
Treatment:
• Air-checked injector high pressure oil pump assembly. Found excessive air leakage @ pump bleed hole & pump shaft. Installed new pump assembly with updated STC tube.
• Re-checked pressure…air leakage under oil delivery tubes.
Replaced main & dummy tubes.
• Re-tested for air leaks…located injector leakage on left bank. Replaced injector unit.
• Re-tested…no further leaks
Result: Engine runs perfectly with zero hot start issues. Ford’s 6.0 diesel is notorious for hard hot starts and extended crank times. The proper repair requires air pressure testing each item as replaced to thoroughly determine and correct the multiple issues these engines are known to have.

Patient: 2012 XF Jaguar 5L V8 | 78,405 Miles
Automotive Physician: ASE–Certified Master Technician Jonny Barrs
Symptom(s): Leaking Coolant underneath Intake Manifold and Water Pump
Diagnosis: Water Pump and Outlet Transfer Pipe Leaking Coolant.
Treatment: Remove Intake Manifold to gain access to Water Pump and Connector Pipe Assembly. During this operation, we took photos of Intake Ports & Valves to illustrate the carbon-fouling effects inherent in Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. Although this repair corrected a coolant leak, it also shows how GDI engines are prone to create hardened carbon polyps inside ports and behind valves, which causes blockage of air, reducing performance, MPG and engine longevity.
Result: No coolant leaks. Vehicle’s engine saved from overheating and possible (severe) damage.

Bobby Likis tests 3M Headlight Clear Coat
Thanks to 3M for sending me the 3M Headlight Clear Coat to test. I enjoyed taking a few minutes out of the Car Clinic shop & studio to give the product a spin. As you can see in the video, the application was easy and the results fantastic. Who cares about headlights? Anyone concerned with #AutoSafety and carrying precious cargo, like yourself or your family. Says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, “With about half of traffic deaths occurring either in the dark or in dawn or dusk conditions, improved headlights have the potential to bring about substantial reductions in fatalities.” Take a look at your headlights...then consider taking 10 minutes to improve the looks and safety of your ride.

Car Clinic: Bobby's "Community Salute" to Ronald McDonald House
Thought we’d springboard this week with a #PensacolaCommunity Salute to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida. Ronald McDonald house has been a home-away-from-home for more than 20,000 adults and children in most critical times. Hope your family never has that sort of misfortune in your lives, but if you do, RMH is - as on of the online reviews reflects - “a Godsend.” Take a look at our Community Salute...then consider celebrating/sponsoring Kaps for Kids on Friday, April 22. Go to http://www.rmhc-nwfl.org/ for details.
