My fiancé and I were sleeping peacefully the night before the big day when we heard a knock on the door. Sleepy and disoriented, I looked at the clock, and it said three in the morning. The doorbell camera app on my phone showed my grandma standing on our doorstep, and I shot out of bed immediately.
Something terrible had to have happened for my grandma to drive to our house in the middle of the night before our wedding. I ran downstairs and opened the door.

I came back early from a conference to find my husband already in our hotel room. The first thing I noticed was the overwhelming scent of women’s perfume. He greeted me at the door with an over-the-top, "Mary, my beloved wife!"

I went to her house, feeling the emptiness of her absence. The first thing I saw was an unfinished knitted sock on the table. It was her favorite hobby. I picked it up and broke down crying.

I needed to go to her grave, even though I was too late. On the way, I bought daisies — her favorite flowers.
