Assalamu alaykum, in sha Allah this reaches you in the best of health and iman!

Today is the 20th day of Ramadan, and subhanAllah soon two thirds of this noble month will come to an end.

It’s time to really step up our game as we are approaching the ten last nights of Ramadan. But how can we outdo ourselves when we have tried so hard up until now, and to try even harder might seem unrealistic for us?

We need to take inspiration from somewhere that will in sha Allah help us to try even harder. But who can possibly inspire us at this stage?

Let us look at the sahabah, the best generation of our ummah, and those hard-working generations of early Muslims who followed them. Let us look at how they strived and struggled in the month of Ramadan.

It might be said that we can never reach the level of the sahabah and early generations, so why even bother trying to imitate them?

The answer is that while it is true that we cannot reach their level, we can still take inspiration from them to improve ourselves in accordance to what we’re realistically able to achieve. But if we never take inspiration from those who were better than us, chances are that we will never be able to improve ourselves.

It has been narrated that imam Ash-Shafi’i used to finish a recitation of the Quran twice a day in Ramadan, completing a total of 60 recitations throughout the month. Now some people find this really hard to believe.

It is possible for a skilled hafidh to finish one Quran-recitation in 6-7 hours. So, if you sit the whole day it is technically possible for someone like imam Ash-Shafi’i to complete two Quran recitations a day.

Even if we are not able to reach this level, at least let us take some inspiration in order to increase the amount we recite of the Quran a little bit.

If we used to recite one juz/para a day, let’s try to recite one and a half for example.

During the time of the early generations, the length of the night prayer used to be much longer, and many people used to stand the whole night up until suhoor/sehri time.

It has been narrated that in the time of Umar (Ra) they used to finish the Quran two or three times in taraweeh, and not just once as is common today.

Maybe we can take some inspiration from this and try to increase the length of our prayers. Even if we are praying behind an imam, we can continue to pray after he finishes.

There are many more stories to mention so try to learn more about what Ramadan meant to the earliest generations of our ummah.

May Allah make you steadfast and allow you to take more and more inspiration from the salaf and implement that in your life. Ameen.

Among the things the sahabah used to struggle for was giving sadaqah, and they used to be the most generous of people, completely giving up the luxuries of this life in favor for the akhirah.

For example, it has been narrated that Ibn Umar (Ra) was given 22,000 gold dinars in a sitting, and he didn’t get up from the gathering until he gave all of it away. [Az-Zuhd (Imam Ahmad) 1062]

Let’s understand this according to our day’s currencies.
1 dinar equals 4.25 grams of 24 K gold.

4.25 grams x 22,000 coins = 93,500 grams of gold.

1 gram of 24 K gold today equals about $55 dollars.

93,500 grams × $55 dollars = $5,142,500 dollars.

SubhanAllah, Ibn Umar (Ra) gave away gold worth more than 5 million dollars according to today’s rate, in a single gathering!

This is the example of the sahabah who did not care about the pleasures of this worldly life, but only cared about the akhirah.

Imagine all the rewards Ibn Umar (Ra) got for giving away all that gold, and think about how he will see the fruits of that in the akhirah.

You might not have 5 million dollars to give away, but remember that Allah rewards each individual for their sadaqah according to whatever they’re able to give.

Whatever you’re able to give, Allah will reward you immensely for it, and if you’re able to contribute more and continuously, that’s even better.
