The Ventura College beach volleyball team returned to community college competition Thursday, winning a pair of matches in Huntington Beach. The Pirates (4-2) swept host Golden West 5-0 without dropping a set before defeating Cerritos 4-1. The VC women's basketball team overcame a sluggish first quarter in defeating Los Angeles Pierce 74-53 in Woodland Hills Wednesday. Sam McKenzie led four Pirates in double-figures with 19 points and Alexa Coubal scored 13. Elena Ferrara and Alexis Howery contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. McKenzie, Howery and Leslie Salazar grabbed seven rebounds each while Coubal and Tiernan Phillips each had six boards. Salazar also handed out seven assists and Phillips dropped five dimes. Congratulations to Lieutenant Erica Elias as she paves the way as the first female Commander of the Gilroy Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility (CVEF) since it was built in 1985. Lt. Elias is ecstatic to give back to the community where she was raised. She graduated from Hollister High School and Gavilan College before attending the CHP Academy in 1999.

According to Lt. Elias, “If I can do this profession as a first generation born in the USA of Mexican parents, my first language was Spanish, then anyone can do this!”

Lt. Elias would like to motivate others to join the noble policing profession no matter their gender. Her favorite CHP community outreach program is the El Protector Program, where she can educate the Spanish speaking community on the laws in California. “Enforcement is one way to save lives daily, through education we can make an impact on the community we serve as well,” describing how the CVEF educates commercial drivers related to the Commercial Industry Education Program (CIEP), Farm Labor Vehicles and Passenger Vehicle Inspection Program the Gilroy CVEF provides. Congratulations Lt. Elias and welcome home!
