In May 1, 2017 Mountain Comprehensive Care Center opened its Hope House program — the organization’s person-centered, trauma-informed evidenced-based treatment for women with substance use and mental health disorders — with inpatient and outpatient services on East 19th Street before having to relocate years later.

As of May 2023, Hope House relaunched its residential program in a former apartment complex on the corner of Veach Road and Dixiana Court, while its outpatient program — which has been in operation since the move from East 19th Street — has secured a home right next door.

Concerned citizens in the area began posting in local Facebook groups in December about a duck at Yellow Creek Park that seemed to be injured with a fish hook stuck in its bill.

According to the posters, they had contacted area organizations but were told that nothing could be done to help the injured waterfowl.

Felicia Fullerton, who currently lives in Hancock County, was tagged in the posts by a mutual friend.

“The friend knew that I had experience helping and rehabilitating ducks, so they tagged me in the post,” Fullerton said.

Members of the Owensboro Rotary Club joined in the process of having frank discussions about community issues Wednesday, when the group met with representatives from the Greater Owensboro Leadership.

Last year, the Leadership Institute partnered with the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation to release “Building a Better Owensboro: A New Path Forward for Owensboro-Daviess County.” The report, which was compiled through interviews, meetings and public events, identified areas of concern among 1,200 residents, as well as the community’s strengths.

The idea behind the effort is to hold meetings where residents can talk about issues, find areas of agreement and connection, and find ways they can be a part in working to address problems such as homelessness, affordable housing and drug addiction.

“The foundation is the philanthropic arm of Owensboro Health, and what that means is we are able to receive donations in the form of individual contributions, corporate gifts, foundation gifts; we even can apply for federal and state grant dollars,” said Tracy Naylor, executive director of the Owensboro Health Foundation. “We bring charitable dollars into the healthcare system with the effort and the intention of supporting our patients, supporting avenues of growth that perhaps can’t be covered through traditional revenue streams within the healthcare system.”

The majority of the services Owensboro Health provides its patients are covered through traditional billing avenues.

Owensboro native Zack Stewart has been involved in marital arts for about as long as he can remember.

After starting as a student at Chi’s Karate in the mid-1990s as a 10 year old, Stewart quickly progressed to assisting with teaching, which led to him owning his own facility for several years in Nashville before he moved back to Owensboro and opened Shinka Dojo Owensboro in November 2023.

A bill filed by a Lexington area state representative would create a standard for a “living wage” in Kentucky and would require future businesses to pay employers accordingly.

The bill, House Bill 129, defines “living wage” as a wage equivalent or greater than 130% of the poverty level in the county where a person works.

If approved, the bill would apply to any business that is created after the bill becomes law, if the business meets certain conditions. For example, any business receiving government incentives or grants, a company that contracts with any branch of government, a business leasing government property and any businesses in “enterprise” or “opportunity” zones where tax incentives have been or will be provided.

Congressman Brett Guthrie (2nd District-R) didn’t anticipate he would still be serving in Congress when he was first elected to his congressional seat in 2008.

But because of the continued support he has received from voters in his district, he has risen through the ranks of the Republican caucus to be chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for the 119th Congress, which gaveled in on Jan. 3. It continues a tradition of influence for the district that began with William Natcher rising to chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations during his 40-plus years holding the seat.
