Marcus once again is running the show solo as we prepare to close out the Year 2023 (with hopefully fewer fillers such as “um” and “uh” compared to the last episode). Our next episode will be released no later than Friday, January 5th, and although a final decision has not yet been reached, the hope at this point is that John will be rejoining the show for the next episode released in January 2024. To allow for us to get through the move and everything that it entails, our next episode will be released by next Wednesday, December 20th, when we will be getting settled into our new home. PROGRAMMING NOTE: Hey everyone, after repeated delays with releasing our next episode, we have a programming note to share. For at least the next few episodes, John will be stepping away and Marcus will be hosting The RTWJ Podcast on his own. The temporary change has nothing to do with the relationship between John and Marcus as co-hosts or friends, and John will return to the show in the near future. We appreciate all your support as we navigate this temporary change.

Marcus’ first solo episode will be released this Monday, November 20th, and will continue to release episodes on the 1st and 15th day of each month.

As we shared on social media, sadly this policy was passed on Thursday, September 7th, and is the first of what is likely to be many other policies to be considered throughout Orange County. Regardless of how diverse or accepting your community may be, no school district is safe from these policies being brought for a vote.

At the RTWJ Podcast, we are extremely disappointed in the Orange Unified School District becoming the first school district in Orange County and sixth district in California to pass a policy for parental notification if a student wishes to use a different name or set of pronouns, or if they wish to use segregated spaces designated for a different s*x from the one they were assigned at birth. Policies such as these fail to provide sufficient support and resources for students who may face rejection from their families and even find themselves on the streets. We’ll be sure to cover this topic in our next episode, scheduled for release in mid-September. The RTWJ Podcast studios are located in Orange within the jurisdiction of OUSD.

As a podcast that is LGBTQ-hosted and promotes inclusion in society, we are devastated as details continue to be released about the small business owner near Lake Arrowhead, CA, who was shot and killed after an argument about a rainbow Pride flag on display outside her clothing store. The shooter, who was ultimately killed in a shootout with law enforcement, tore down the flag prior to entering the business, and engaged in the argument that led to the shooting. Although the store owner, Lauri Carleton, did not identify herself as part of the LGBTQ+ community, she was a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, including local organization Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+, and was proud to support the community through displaying the Pride flag at the front of her store. The community of Cedar Glen is just about 70 miles northwest of our studio in Orange, in the mountains of Southern California’s Inland Empire region.

Tragedies such as this are dark reminders of the long path we still have in 2023 to achieve full inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals in our society. It’s a message we’ll continue to promote on The RTWJ Podcast, as hate continues to be a real and serious threat for our LGBTQ+ community.

Believe it or not, yesterday was the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, which eliminated federal protections for reproductive rights and set off trigger laws in various states to restrict access to reproductive health services. Today, reproductive rights can vary widely across state lines, and some politicians from ultra-conservative states would love to see reproductive rights taken away completely nationwide, even in circumstances such as those involving a r**e victim. These are the same ultra-conservatives we already have been focusing on this Pride Month 2023 as it relates to the anti-LGBTQ agenda they push, especially when it comes to the rights of transgender individuals.

Today marks the 7-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub Shooting in Orlando, Florida, which was the deadliest incident of violence against LGBTQ individuals in the United States, and the second deadliest mass shooting in the United States after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting that occurred the following year. During the shooting, 49 people lost their lives and 53 others were wounded.

Just from the rhetoric we constantly hear from conservative extremists alone, we know that hatred and violence against LGBTQ people continues to be a threat that our community faces to this day. We’re proud on The RTWJ Podcast to continue promoting full inclusion and rights for the LGBTQ community, and are proud to be an LGBTQ-hosted podcast.
