Work continues here at Pegana Press. This week's highlight is one of our favorite releases "The Age of Whelming" Letterpress Edition by Clark Ashton Smith,. This edition comprises stories chronicling the demise of the continent of Poseidonis, glowingly illustrated by Justine Jones. More about this very special edition may be found here.

To help support the edition my partner Daven and I have created an audiobook of the fabulous story "The Double Shadow." contained in the edition. Daven provides narration and music and I do postproduction on the story. Here is a link to the tale.

I always wanted to record a version of the Judas Priest song The Green Manalishi, which was originally an early Fleetwood Mac song. So here we go, my rather intense new/old remake walking the line between metal and trippy. A fun ride in headphones. So if you're feeling bored or depressed crank this up. Featuring my partner in crime Daven Tillinghast, Composer and Lyricist.

Here’s one for all my metal friends: a tune that I came to love by way of Judas Priest, though it was originally written and performed by Peter Green early in the days of Fleetwood Mac. Daven brought a very straight-ahead rock feel, which, under my direction became increasingly psychedelic and demented, as I’m sure you’ll agree. Enjoy!

My collaborator on A Dreamers Tales audiobook project Daven Tillinghast runs a Patreon page to support his original music, and below is a link where, for free, you can stream or download one of the tracks from his newest EP, which I mixed and mastered. I even contributed some of the arrangement ideas, for example, the ‘la-la-la’ sing-along at the end, as well as suggesting that he conscript his lovely wife Megan to make a cameo.

Enjoy the track, it sounds best on high quality headphones or when turned up loud on a big system

Throwback Thursday on Friday!
Back in the day at Triad Studios in Seattle I engineered and produced a lot of metal bands. The studio was known as the home of Quuensryche so naturally attracted many metal bands hoping to capture that success for themselves. It must have worked as I led several bands to major label deals.
Being the new guy I did many of the late night sessions; there was a lower rate for the midnight to 8am slot and that's where I lived. I had grown up with my Rush and Black Sabbath t shirts so that was fine with me.
Here is a track from Cyperus circa 1992 doing a remake of the Mountain classic "Mississippi Queen." Play it loud, we certainly did. The era when kick drums were lead instruments! If you're looking for something to inspire you to tell your boss to p**s off today this should do it. Guitars by Jason Celestine
I'm currently working on a remake of "The House of the Rising Sun" with my partner Daven Tillinghast which is a mashup of Metallica, NIN, and Peter Gabriel {once we add some tribal drums}. Enjoy the Cyperus track or hate it, as tastes may vary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWlforcXmsQ

Warning! Throwback Thursday.

Back in the day, bands treated their engineers like gold. The lead man of the band Aurora, Lyle Ronglien flew me and him down to L.A. to master the album I had just finished mixing sometime in 1990. We had a nice hotel near Disneyland, wallets full of Mickey bucks and ready to roll.

After we got stowed at the hotel we rolled over to Disneyland. There were hordes of happy people streaming out of the main gates with their Mickey balloons; streaming out because it had just closed! Off season time back then.

So, what do you do in LA if you can't go to Disneyland? Lyle's suggestion here; hit every strip club in LA and Hollywood, and get lit while doing it. I kept those Mickey bucks for years, they wouldn't take them at the strip clubs, I tried. I'm still p**sed at Mickey.

Around sunup we began looking for the rental car and eventually found it and made it back to the hotel, just in time to sleep for an hour or so before we had to be at Bernie Grundman Mastering for our session.

Fortunately, at that point all I had to do was listen and nod my head. [ouch] Chris Bellman, the mastering engineer had credits up the w***o, from Taj Mahal to Iron Maiden so there wasn't much for me to do except listen and drink coffee. An amazing job done by Chris.

Here's a track from the album called "White Liar". Recorded at London Bridge Studios and mixed by me at Triad Studios.

In my opinion this was the height of the analog era. Huge consoles with moving fader automation and giant tape machines. Fat, warm, punchy. None of the digital stuff today comes close to that sound.
