Our Stories

The first woman attorney I ever met in my community, was the Judge in the trial for which had served as a juror for a week and a half long trial, Judge Nancy Coats.

Going to the courthouse to do my civic duty had triggered a curiosity in me, even before I got there; though the thought had not yet occurred to me, that I would - just a few years later - be graduating from law school. But, I certainly did.

After the trial, I reached out to the Judge - she encouraged my interest in the law, in law school, and she and I became friends. Several years later, as I was contemplating how to go about getting my first job, she told me a story about when she was in the same place in life, several decades earlier. She’d interviewed for a firm, and the gentlemen who had interviewed her told her they thought she would be a great hire, “But,” they said, “we can’t hire you. We don’t know who you’d eat lunch with.”

“You can’t eat with the secretaries, since you’re a lawyer; and you can’t eat with us, since our wives would be jealous.”
