Imagine playing mermaids in the ocean in ALASKA 😱🥶 I got the chance to do just that when we went snorkeling in Ketchikan with Snorkel Alaska While we were snorkeling we saw crabs, jellies, sea stars, sea cucumbers, urchins, and tons of fish while cozy in 7mm wetsuits. The water was about 64 degrees so it felt perfect! Well, in a very thick and insulating wetsuit it did. I had to bring along a tail and go for a couple quick swims after our snorkeling because when else would I have a chance to mermaid in Alaskan waters? 🥶 Please PLEASE be careful swimming in cold water. I have multiple dive certifications and experience performing and swimming in 72 degree water that made me confident I could do this for a few minutes and listen to my body to know when to stop. I also had multiple family members who know my mannerisms watching me as well as our 2 dive guides Fred and Kurt, both very experienced PADI pros. Pay attention to the bottom of the spring in this clip! At the beginning the bottom is mostly sandy, but by the end I’d swam to an area covered in algae. This algae shouldn’t be there (or at least shouldn’t be taking over) but it’s flourishing thanks to nutrient pollution largely from fertilizer run off. The thick algae keeps the grasses from receiving enough sunlight and growing, which is a major problem when manatees come to the springs for the winter! 🪸 I want everyone to experience this. Seriously. The magic of swimming at a healthy reef and seeing more species of fish than I could count is something I’ll never forget. However, if we don’t change something immediately we’ll lose the reefs - some climate scientists predict this could happen as soon as 2050. Rising ocean temperatures and acidification are killing coral, but there are things you can do at home to help! All drains lead to the ocean, so using green lawn and garden products and minimizing your plastic usage (and properly disposing of what you do use rather than littering) can help reduce the harmful chemicals that make their way to the ocean.
