Two Bit Street cafe on Historic 25th street has been one of my favorites for over twenty years. Not only so many great things on the menu but the history of ogden is dripping off the walls. And great personal service by Penny and team.
At one time it was notorious during the neon era and prohibition was in place. In the 80s the owner showed me the lever in the back of the bar where they could switch the flow from whiskey to seltzer if a raid was happening. The bootleg was well hidden in the basement. Back room and underground gambling were the mainstay back then and the club being the first stop after the union station was very popular. Allegedly Al Capone would come here and was friends of Pappas when two bit street as it was called back then, which was also often referred to as little Chicago. When the final raid happened on two bit street in the 1950s they found crated slot machines and roulette tables still packaged not even opened yet. My father in the sixties and seventies still called it ‘two bit street’ and ad we as trends were going downtown to play on Saturdays we were warned to NOT venture down there at all. When driving through we would lock the doors and watched the happenings and drive down red light alley, or electric alley as it was also known to see if hookers were still there. They were not. But always expect so El Burracho and Panchos on Lincoln avenue corners was a sight to behold and was regularly written up in papers for some kind of raid. That stigma is finally worn off after decades of renovation and pioneers paving the way to what it is now from the first renovations in early 80s until present. In 2001 the union square filled up the entire vacant block on south side of 100 block and that opened up the floor of vitality into anew and what I call serving Renaissance in ogden. The third is happening now! The first when I’m 84 the first seven renovated buildings were dedicated and rented. Now it is a hot, hopping, happening street with many restaurants, pubs and shops.
I first went in to the club as it has been known for decades when just 21 when Tom pappas the third owned it in the 1970s when 25th was still a bit skid rowish. Not a bit actually, a lot! Then because of a strange legal family deal where properties were split up after the passing of big daddy Tom Pappas the first, tom3rd moved up to the 200 block which is now brewskis and had his pub called PAPPY’S. That’s the one I hung out in the 80s. I spent a lot of time in the Club in the 80s and at pappys which were fun, as our publication Junction City News was just across the street in 107 25th from 1984-89. I heard many first hand stories from elder gentlemen of their days in the club during the 40s war era and beyond. I wish I video recorded them as these fellas are long gone now. But the oral stories live on. We did publish some stories in JCN which are safely stored at Weber State University library in the special collections. One day we’ll digitize them for the public.
The Club had different bar owners from then for over two decades, 1970s-2001, although still owned by the Pappas family.
Penny & James Dayley began “Two Bit Street Cafe” in 2001 just prior to the winter Olympics. The same time we began Street Ogden just up the street. They have been a local favorite since then with Penny in the kitchen and featuring her recipes.
I am stuck on their Greek spinach salad! OMG! I order it every time for twenty years. I’m like that I get stuck on a favorite at each restaurant and stick with it. I do need to get more adventurous. Get this! Fresh baby leaf spinach with spinach fettuccine on top with feta, Greek olives, purple onion, and topped with chicken or shrimp. Simple but complex blend of perfection. I usually do the grilled chicken but this time we had the shrimp. Omg again! The dressing is the key to the salad, just the right amount of everything. Penny told me once long ago what was in it and I’ve tried this recipe at home but not the same although still good. Hers is the original. It can be served up Vegan as well!
They are also known for panini sandwiches and breakfasts/Sunday brunch too among many other savory items. There have many items on the menu but these are what I always go for. Also try the fresh fruit sorbet that Penny makes. Watermelon is my favorite. Always local fruit in season. They are a local favorite with a steady and regular clientele.
James does hypnosis shows as well monthly when not touring. Oh and the backroom is available for gatherings and performances on their stage. They also participate in the first Friday Art Stroll so we got to see works by an incredible artist. Got to spend tour with one of my friends daughter and Mojos Ogden kids Amethyst who has officially joined the ogden team. Great times.
