De Zavala Elementary Launches New STEM Model
Support Provided by Chevron, the ExxonMobil Foundation, and ConocoPhillips
November 19, 2025 — In Midland ISD, De Zavala Elementary School is embarking on an exciting new chapter as it launches a comprehensive STEM model designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and innovation in every student. The initiative, made possible through the generous support of Chevron, the ExxonMobil Foundation, and ConocoPhillips, will transform the campus into a hub of hands-on exploration and real-world learning.
Chevron is helping bring the model to life through LEGO® Education resources, which allow students to experience engineering, design, and coding in engaging, age-appropriate ways. The ExxonMobil Foundation has provided funding for a new campus marquee that is a visible symbol of De Zavala’s renewed focus on STEM learning. ConocoPhillips has invested in the school’s rebranding by funding hallway and door wraps, campus pride signage, and new staff and student t-shirts that help create a vibrant, purpose-driven environment reflecting the excitement of discovery.
De Zavala Elementary has implemented the School Action Fund (SAF) STEM model to provide students with high-quality learning experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This model promotes hands-on, inquiry-based learning designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking. Through the SAF STEM model, De Zavala aims to increase student engagement, strengthen teacher capacity, and equip all learners with the skills and knowledge necessary for future success in college and STEM careers.
“Our mission, at De Zavala Elementary, is to inspire a passion for STEM learning in a dynamic environment where students actively explore, innovate, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges,” said David Duarte, principal of the campus. “With the support of Chevron, the ExxonMobil Foundation, and ConocoPhillips, our students are gaining opportunities to think like scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers every day.”
While De Zavala Elementary School is a neighborhood school, families interested in the STEM model are welcome to apply for a transfer during the district’s designated transfer request window. Those families will be offered seats as space allows.
“Midland ISD is grateful for the business and community partners who continue to invest in our students’ futures,” said Dr. Stephanie Howard, MISD Superintendent. “The STEM model at De Zavala is an outstanding example of how partnerships can transform classrooms, ignite curiosity, and prepare students for a lifetime of discovery and success.”
De Zavala has already seen measurable academic growth, particularly in grades 4–6, where students are meeting or nearing their learning goals. The school’s shift toward inquiry-based, hands-on learning is expected to build on this momentum and foster even higher achievement across all grade levels.
