We wanted to share an update: Mary and I are putting a pause on new Bucket content for the foreseeable future. Bucket has been an incredible project to work on—we feel overwhelmed by the love and support we have received from our community and are so grateful. With that said, Mary and I have taken on new projects! I’m going to flight school in Phoenix, AZ and Mary is growing her design business (and taking care of her rambunctious pup; swipe for a pic!). We love Bucket, we love the vision, and we hope to continue the project in some capacity in the future.

*NEW QUICK & DIRTY*

A Black History Tour of Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is known for its dripping Spanish moss, live oak trees that arch above streets, and a southern drawl as slow as molasses. It’s a city of evocative beauty, rich in vivid cultural imagery and resonant of our nation’s shared memories.

Here’s the problem: travelers experience only a sliver of the regions’ true cultural landscapes. In Savannah, and many of our cities, Black history is ignored, whitewashed, or buried beneath problematic plantation tourism.

This Q&D will provide you with resources to give your trip to Savannah the essential context to truly see the region you’re exploring.

If you’re going to Savannah (or even just curious to know more about the city’s history), download the guide. Link is in our bio!

Keep your eyes peeled for this massive installation on your drive into Marfa, Texas. 👀 It’s tough to miss.

This huge installation by John Cerney features giant plywood cutouts of James Dean and Liz Taylor as they appeared in the movie Giant, which was filmed in Marfa. Giant was Dean’s last film, and is considered one of the most authentic movies ever made about Texas. Next to these cutouts there’s a solar-powered audio system playing country music by Michael Nesmith. On repeat.

Headed to Big Bend? Here are three tips we’ve got for you:

🍁 🌸 Go in the spring and fall: The summer is hot as h-e-double hockey sticks. Plan your visit between November and April to get the coolest weather.

📖 Bring your passport: The park hugs the border of Mexico. Bring your passport so you can hop right over.

🚙 Plan on a road trip: Big Bend is not near any major airport. If you’re flying into El Paso, you’ll have a five-hour drive.

Santa Elena is on the western edge of Big Bend NP at the end of Maxwell Scenic Drive and is one of the most spectacular (and popular) trails in the park. The Rio Grande winds its way through the canyon and you have two options for this hike: you can hike along the trail 🏃🏻 or hop in 💦 and walk in the water.

Big Bend feels like it sits on the edge of the earth. You don’t just happen upon it—you have to go there with purpose.

Just 1% of visitors to US national parks choose Big Bend for their travel destination. It is hundreds of miles away from any major city or airport and there’s not much else around it. It’s hard to imagine any living thing flourishing out in this hot-as-the-dickens swath of land, but if you’re willing to dig a little deeper, you’ll see that the area is full of life.

Here is some good ol' 🇺🇸American🇺🇸 history to close out the Fourth of July weekend:

The Portland Observatory is a local relic. The observatory was used as a maritime signal station and it’s the last of its kind. This giant red structure was built in 1807 by Captain Lemuel Moody as a way to communicate when boats were coming into the harbor. Merchants would want to know when their goods could be expected to be unloaded but, because of the many islands off the coast, it was difficult to see boats coming in. Using a telescope and flags, Moody would observe when a boat was arriving and inform merchants by flying different flags corresponding to each boat. It was a great money maker—he charged merchants $5 a year for his services 🤑
