These are just a few of the many amazing heart-finds I’ve come across over the past month. For me, they’re a constant reminder that we’re not alone. A divine presence surrounds us. We just need our hearts and minds to be open to it.

I can’t help but notice these treasures’ imperfections. They have flaws and I think that’s a nod to the fact that life can be challenging, even overwhelming at times.

It’s to be expected that we will get “banged up” as we travel life’s roads with all their twists and turns, cracks, and even pot holes. Nevertheless, we can endure and even thrive with our determination and steadfast faith.

Such a special day!

I had the joy of being part of the 104th birthday of one of the precious Red Stone ladies at Westminster Canterbury in Virginia Beach. Yes, you read that correctly - 104!

The staff brought the birthday girl a giant birthday hat and festive socks. (She’s known for her signature socks!), and gold crowns and zany glasses for the others.

I wrote a poem in her honor, and gave gift bags to all the ladies, each with a wooden heart ornament, colorful heart stickers to decorate them, and a fun heart bracelet.

It was so much fun to celebrate the birthday girl and help each woman decorate her heart in her own beautiful way.

As you can see in the photos, the only drawback was a COVID outbreak at the facility, so all the staff and I had to be masked and no refreshments could be served.

Spending time with these ladies is always so rewarding. They fill my heart to the brim!

The Portsmouth Public Library’s Local Authors Expo this past Saturday was such a wonderful experience!

I had the chance to meet some truly talented fellow authors, connect with kind attendees, and even sold copies of “HEARTS: Finding Unexpected Signs of Hope, Comfort, and Joy.” As my very first bookfest, it was both exciting and a great learning opportunity.

Huge thanks to the Portsmouth Public Library for hosting such a rewarding event, and for the warm hospitality shown to all of us participating authors.

And to top it all off, I was lucky enough to win one of the raffle prizes—a beautiful gift basket! Tucked inside was a bracelet that reads FOLLOW YOUR HEART. It felt like a little, much needed, nod from up above.

Do you see what I see?

With the school year wrapping up, I wasn’t surprised to find an eraser lying in the street. But what was surprising and so delightful was the heart that seems to be drawn or pressed into it.

It instantly reminded me of the impact teachers have on our lives. I’ve been so fortunate to learn from teachers who not only had brilliant minds, but big hearts as well.

They shaped my path in ways I’m still grateful for. They not only expanded my mind, but they showed me they truly cared. They touched my heart.

It’s not unusual for me to feel a deep sense of joy with each heart I find. But this one overwhelmed me like only a few have. Its beauty, perfect shape (a magnolia leaf covered in soft trichomes), and the timing all felt incredibly significant.

Over the weekend, my husband, sister-in-law, and I were working at my in-laws’ home, preparing for an upcoming auction. Thankfully, we all get along beautifully, but the emotional and mental toll is different for each of us. We will all feel a sense of relief when it’s behind us.

One of my tasks was to tell all the neighbors about the auction and leave them with a flyer covering the details. I knew I was the right one for the job, but I still felt a bit anxious. My mind was distracted with so many memories of our time spent here. I couldn’t help but wonder what my in-laws would think about all we’re doing.

After visiting the last neighbor, I spotted this striking heart in the curb as I walked back. The neighborhood has no sidewalks, so I was walking in the street. There are magnolia trees nearby, but none where I was.

I felt like this perfect heart-find was waiting for me. A lovely subtle sign from God and from my in-laws. A heavenly gift of love and encouragement.

“After a loved one passes, be encouraged by their passing and legacy… Live with encouragement knowing that they are proud and smiling down on you from heaven.” Matt Fraser

So many of us are going through stuff. Whether it has to do with our personal or work lives, these things can impact us on so many levels - emotionally, mentally, and physically.

No matter how many years I have on this earth, I still find myself in situations that shake me to my core. I wish I were one of those people who could just let things run off my back, but that’s not in my DNA.

Something recently happened on a work project that felt like a punch to the gut. It not only caught me off guard, but I honestly couldn’t believe it happened. I’ll get through it, because I always do, and because of my faith, determination, and the love, support, and understanding of my amazing family and friends.

That said, I’m also realizing this kind of situation takes more of a toll on my physical health than it used to. I don’t bounce back so quickly.

A couple of days after this incident, an incredible heart appeared. This heart-find formed from scattered, uneven rose petals isn’t perfect, but maybe that’s what makes it even more powerful. A quiet reminder that comfort often appears in unexpected ways. I felt as if it was a gentle message from up above, lifting me up and reminding me to stay focused on my mission and not let others’ behavior throw me off course.

End-of-Year Gift for Teachers

I’m so touched to hear from parents who are giving my book as a year-end gift for their children’s teachers.

Admittedly, I’m a bit biased, but I truly believe it’s a wonderful way to thank these amazing individuals who make such a lasting impact on our children’s lives.

To make each gift more personal, I’m happy to sign and inscribe copies for anyone local. And for those outside my area, I can mail you a signed and inscribed bookplate to place inside the book.

What a special way to say “Thank You!” to our teachers who give so much of themselves, especially their hearts!

I’m sharing this excerpt from my book, “HEARTS,” to honor my mom this Mother's Day. She’s been gone way too long, but she is always in my heart.

my mom is always with me

I often think about my mom and regret with all my
heart that her time on earth was cut so short. I find myself
talking to her from time to time, sharing my personal
thoughts and feelings. And I often wonder if she can hear
me and if she’s aware of all the important things that have
happened in not just my life but everyone in the family
since her passing.

This heart-find made me tear up. Sure, it’s a very
pretty charm, but what makes it even more beautiful for
me is that my mother’s name began with the letter M. My
feelings in that instant are hard to put into words, but in
that moment, I felt as if my mom was letting me know she’s
with me. The comfort and joy it gave me and continues
to when it comes to mind or when I take a look at it from
time to time is priceless. No doubt, it was a sign from up
above that my mom, one of God’s angels, hears me and
knows my heart.

“There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever
you are, you will always be in my heart.”

I recently dropped off copies of my book at Texture of Ghent, a beautiful gift shop in Norfolk, VA. It was such a wonderful experience. Kelly, the owner, was not only warm and welcoming, but she was also so understanding of my logistical situation. Her kindness truly lifted my heart.

As I was rushing back to my car, a heart-shaped rock caught my eye. It had quite a few battle scars, but what struck me most was its smooth texture given its weathered appearance. Isn’t that amazing? I was so excited that I darted back to the shop to show it to Kelly.

That uplifting moment at Texture of Ghent, followed by discovering a heart with such a beautiful texture, made my day. I don’t believe in coincidences. This felt like a lovely nod to Kelly’s support and the gratitude I had just expressed.

It’s always the right time to be kind and show appreciation. It does the heart good.

Little Bits of Unexpected Joy

What are the odds? From time to time, I come across some cool hearts when I’m on the road.

Whether I’m on a call, chatting with a passenger, thinking about family or book stuff, lost in thought about an upcoming meeting, mentally adding to my to-do list, or just singing along to the radio or tuned into a news report, these surprising heart-finds always put a smile on my face and give me a lift I truly value.

I’m a firm believer in taking a pause and embracing what delights us.
