Every student in grades nine through twelve at Big Spring High School is given the opportunity to join the staff. The club meets once or twice a week after school and is financed by the Big Spring High School and fundraisers. Once a member, one becomes part of a team. The team is loosely divided to focus on particular subjects for the magazine. For literature, layout, and art, an editor is appoint
ed. Also, an editor-in-chief is selected to oversee the appointed editors. Each student in the school is invited and encouraged to submit their literary and art pieces to Gears. The submissions are collected and sorted to see which ones will then go into the magazine. The art editor decides what art will go in, and the decision upon what literature will go in is more of an open discussion. The staff also reserves the right to edit any of the writings for grammar, punctuation, and spelling. The editor-in-chief has the final say on what actually goes into the magazine. The ideas and beliefs expressed in the magazine do not represent those of the magazine staff, advisors, or the Big Spring School District. The staff considers Gears an open forum for free expression of ideas. All right are reserved to the individual artists, authors, and photographers.
