My new favorite donor- the MXL5000. Solid, good weight, great headbasket, pad and filter switches. The 5000 board has a great layout with room for the transformer and all components on one side. Easy to open to access the internal pattern switch. All boxes checked! I picked the roughest looking body to build my own personal one in. It's got a CK12 style capsule and the cinemag transformer.

Donor Body Alert: Very clean looking very cheap Nova. The headbasket doesn't even look like it's been used for wheel chocks on truck! These are transformer coupled and can fit either K47 or CK12 capsules. Nice heavy weight to them and they even look kind of cool

First builds with new MXL5000 footprint boards. The 5000 is definitely going to be my goto for transformer coupled builds with pad and filter switches. Many advantages over the ST55. The first run of boards were nearly perfect. V1.01 will have a minor mounting hole position tweak and a silkscreen fix. But electrically and layout, they are production ready.

New transformer coupled board drawn for the MXL-5000 footprint. I think this might replace the sterling ST55 as my go-to for TC mics with Pad and Filter switches. The 5000 is easier to mod, is much less mechanically quirky and unlike the 55, the headbasket is big enough for a CK12-style capsule. v1.00 of the boards will be here in a week or so (yes I know, the "Q1" silkscreen is in the wrong spot - already fixed )

The MXL-4000. It's a TL with a extra fancy Schoeps style circuit. It's got Pad and Filter switches AND they did a bipolar voltage multiplier so it can actually do Figure-8. They used very high quality components on this board (and point to point wiring). But after all that, they put the wrong capsule on it. I've fixed that here. This is the fourth one I've done. I liked the first one so much, I made the second one for me.

Next fab and testing phase with the starmount product. After all the hacking, it still works. I was curious about performance degradation with the plexi cover. Well, there is none even with the paper backing still on. And for fun I put a square of top gun over that. Still no degradation. So I'm thinking I'll be sewing a UV cover for it.

This was a day of Record, Rebuild, Re-Record but it nicely demonstrates the improvement over the stock bits. You can hear the classic MXL problem on the 'S' in the word "waste". The vocal is dull like it's under water, yet that S sound is way out of balance. Brighten the vocal up with EQ and the sibilance is impossible. There is NO EQ on any of the mic'd tracks. The drums and synths are plugins but all guitars, bass and vocals are done with this mic before and after the refit.

MXL 990 Mod Montage

A very neglected MXL 990 from ebay served as the model for this build montage video. I was concentrating on shooting so much that I almost forgot to check if it actually worked when I was done. It does :)
