Copied post that speaks of the resilience that a small business must have about never quitting and how branding and marketing are so important for success.

Stanley...

I won't be met with "amens" and praises with what I am about to say, but hey, that's not what this is all about.

I don't have a dog in this race, but I am a business person who also teaches other business people. We market our businesses and we learn from others who do the same....and I have my thoughts.

Stanley. Heard of them?

Maybe all you've heard is about the long hours that people are waiting in line at Target for the Valentine release.

Maybe all you've heard is, "I can't believe people are so obsessed with this cup. I can get the same one at Walmart for half."

Maybe all you've heard is "I wish you gave the same business to us small business owners that you give to a company who grossed 750 million dollars last year".

Maybe you are reading this and thinking, hmmm...where is she going with this?! Well, here's where I'm going. And it may not be where you think.

As a small business owner, I understand business. I understand marketing. I understand influencers. I understand the ins and outs of what it takes to make or break your business.

I also understand that a lot of this TALK that you see about Stanley lately, truly has nothing to do with Stanley at all.

Let me explain...

Stanley is a company that originated in 1913, over 100 years ago by a man who simply wanted to be able to keep his coffee hot while working out in the elements (my thoughts). I know nothing about this man, and I don't pretend to...but this is how my mind operates.

This man likely had people to support. He likely had a family. He likely had big goals of how he could take his business to new heights and make his dreams come true one day. How is that different than any small business owner today?

The difference is, his company has stood the test of time. It has rallied through decades of change and stayed resilient and on course. It has been a staple in many homes long before the viral tumblers of today.

Whatever Mr. Stanley started was nurtured and marketed and respected for longer than we have been alive. How many brands do you know that have stood that test of time?

Don't you realize that MANY of these big businesses we see today thriving were likely once small little labors of love that people sacrifed to get off the ground?

How many small businesses out there today have big dreams? I would hope all of them, or why do it? Do they want to "stop growing" right before people consider them too large to support anymore? Ouch.

When I started my own business 9 years ago, I had dreams and goals. It has already surpassed all I could have dreamed, so I dream bigger. Guess what? The bigger you dream and get, the more adversity comes your way. The more hate you get. The more people don't want you to have support bc somehow, your hard work merits less now than someone who is getting their feet off the ground and starting their own dream.

How does any of that have to do with Stanley tumblers? Well, how does it not? Who doesn't dream of having a legacy and a brand who stands the test of time after a CENTURY? That is to be applauded.

How proud would I be to see my company thriving in 100 years? How proud would I be for my family generations to be able to have a business they can still work hard in and rely on that many generations later?

When does a business get to a point that they no longer deserve to be supported? I LOVE small businesses. I am one. I will always support local and small, but I also love the American dream and what's possible for those who pursue bigger and more and are able to accomplish that. Since when did that become wrong?

Since when did it become cool as a small business to constantly talk and post about how "we can't believe everyone is supporting so and so" and why we are upset about this or that instead of putting our heads down and improving our own business?

Since when did the one who is smarter at marketing and sales become the bad guy just because they know how to get their product in front of more people? I have always heard that you don't always have to be the best at what you do, you just have to be the best at marketing yourself or your product. Stanley has proven that to be exactly right.
