How We Heal by La June Montgomery Tabron was reviewed in the latest issue of Foreword Reviews.

They write: “The prose is engaging and clear, breaking down complex social issues and philanthropic work into smaller pieces and then relating those to personal experiences. This not only results in a moving story but a well-argued case for racial healing methods.”

BookRiot included Our Differences Make Us Stronger by La June Montgomery Tabron in its list of 10 of the Best New Children's Books Coming in January 2025.

Book Riot writes:
"The story is based on Montgomery Tabron’s own and teaches kids about the white flight, a time in the 1950s-’60s when white families left their homes as Black families moved into their neighborhoods.

Increasingly segregated at school, La June doesn’t understand why she has to sit exclusively with the other Black kids. After a kind teacher brings the class together by allowing them to sit and talk in a healing circle, La June begins to appreciate her classmates’ differences."

Our Differences Make Us Stronger publishes on January 14. Preorder here: https://disruptionbooks.com/books/our-differences-make-us-stronger

You can’t spell HO HO HO without OOO, and team Disruption is looking forward to some luxurious, uninterrupted reading during our time off. Here’s what’s on our lists for the holiday break.

Publisher Kris Pauls: I'm reading Cher: The Memoir, Part One, The Name of This Band is R.E.M., and The Editor: How Publishing Legend Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America. Icons only.

Publishing Operations Associate Pamela Harcourt: I’m attempting Swann’s Way as my big holiday read! To be followed by Ex-Wife, a 1929 novel that scandalized the Jazz Age, because I love a lost classic reissue (and check out that cover!), and Joan Didion’s Political Fictions, highly recommended by colleagues.

Editorial & Production Director Alli Shapiro: I'm spending the holidays with the much-discussed Lydia Davis translation of Madame Bovary. I last read Madame Bovary in high school, and I'm excited to revisit the story, but much more excited to see how Davis's precise work colors my experience.

Marketing Director Janet Potter: I saw A Walk in the Park on a few year-end lists and was very intrigued. I always like to read about adventures in nature when it’s too cold to go outside. I’m also reading Kindling, which was recommended by my colleague. It’s described as a book about magic-wielding teenage soldiers for fans of Seven Samurai. I’m sold.

Senior Editor Christina Pulles: Speaking of year-end lists, I’m tackling the book that’s been on seemingly every one of them—James by Percival Everett. I’m balancing that out with the latest in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series.

Let us know what's on your list, and happy reading!

We're very proud that We Choose To: A Memoir of Providing Abortion Care Before, During, and After Roe was named one of Kirkus Reviews Best Indie Books of the Year.

In their review, Kirkus wrote: "This book is valuable for the ways in which it moves discussion of the abortion issue beyond the aphorism 'the personal is political' to show how the inverse is also true, providing a fascinating analysis of changing attitudes regarding the fraught subject. The authors cogently explain why most legal abortion has moved outside of the hospital system—and why it should perhaps stay that way. Boyd and Halvorson-Boyd also refreshingly leave room for the role of religion in approaching decisions about abortion and sensitively consider patients’ ambivalence about the procedure (while still affirming the rightness of their decisions). This work is a thoughtful reckoning with the recent history of abortion in the United States."

In April 2025 we will publish SHAKESPEARE'S GREATEST LOVE by David Medina.

Relying on historical and literary evidence hidden in plain sight, Shakespeare’s Greatest Love tells the true, uncensored love story of William Shakespeare and Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton.

Author David Medina demonstrates that Shakespeare wrote more of his plays and poems for and about Southampton than anyone else—works that are sexually charged, romantic, and ho******ic. He also chronicles the evidence that Southampton provided Shakespeare the support he needed to secure his acting company share, coat of arms, family residence, royal commission, life portrait, and funerary bust.

Shakespeare’s Greatest Love challenges us all to recognize Southampton as the individual who had the most significant impact on Shakespeare’s life, literature, and legacy.

Curtis and Glenna Boyd were interviewed by for .

“Curtis and Glenna’s story—of love, of triumph, of accepting what is amid the uncertainty of our lives—serves as an important reminder of how we may not sunset our work on a win, but that is why we must learn how to face our losses, which are all but certain on the path to liberation.”

Happy publication day to Letters from the Corporation of Brown University: Lives of Usefulness and Reputation, 1764 - 2023, edited by Lauren Zalaznick.

Since the school’s founding, the trustees and fellows of the Corporation of Brown University have written resignation letters as they complete their terms. From the quill-and-ink manuscripts of Brown’s founders to the emails of today, the letters are wise, witty, and heartfelt.

Made public for the first time ever, this collection of letters tells a story of progress and passion in American higher education from a never-before-seen perspective.

Kirkus Reviews called it “a goldmine of historical insight.”

Xochitl Gonzalez called it "a profound and captivating chronicle of American higher education seen through the eyes of those at its helm.”

Ira Glass said: “It’s moving to see all these civic-minded people—so many of them people who’d felt like outsiders when they arrived as students—joining together in common cause.”

The Santa Fe Reporter on We Choose To:

"In this shared memoir, Boyd and Halvorson-Boyd tell their stories of meeting in the days before abortion and how their co-commitment to women guided decades of providing the procedure.

At the risk of hyperbole, their narrative borders on revelatory in its highly intimate look at both their lives as well as the day-to-day work of offering abortion in the United States through three distinct eras of access. It also provides a rare look at patients’ experiences, who gave the authors their permission to do so.

Ultimately, Boyd and Halvorson-Boyd’s unshakeable commitment makes the book vital reading for our shaky times."

NPR's Ira Glass on Letters from the Corporation of Brown University:

"I attended Brown but had no idea any of the stuff in this book was happening behind the scenes. Like I flew coach and didn’t even know there was anything different (and quite interesting) happening in the front of the plane.

It’s moving to see all these civic-minded people—so many of them people who’d felt like outsiders when they arrived as students—joining together in common cause. What a powerful experience they all seemed to have had!

This book made me feel like an ingrate for the fine education I received at their school, ignorant of their arguments and ambitions for the place."

This beautiful coffee table book comes out next Tuesday, September 3. Get your copy here: https://disruptionbooks.com/books/letters-from-the-corporation-of-brown-university
