"I’m not sure I’d be a writer now if I hadn’t read this book when I was 14. I borrowed it from a friend and never gave it back. That guilt-laden unreturned copy is still on my shelf, alongside an early edition hardback, an editor’s cut and a complete, unexpurgated edition." via The Guardian

From a children’s classic to a novel of forbidden love, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Kaliane Bradley, Donal Ryan and more recall their formative reading experiences

Exciting news 📣

Alessandro Baricco's Without Blood adaptation world premier will take place at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)

"This parable-like tale of family, war, and revenge is directed by Angelina Jolie and was filmed at Rome’s famed Cinecittà Studios.
As a director, Angelina Jolie has made a decisive turn from her glamorous on-screen image, crafting thoughtful dramas that illuminate the horrors war visits on individuals. In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011) and First They Killed My Father (TIFF ’17) sharpen that focus further to war’s impact on women and girls in Bosnia and Cambodia, respectively. Without Blood sees Jolie returning to that neglected theme in the cinema of war. This time she directs another global screen icon, Salma Hayek Pinault"

"In 1965, in the packed Cambridge Union Society in London, James Baldwin, a voice of the civil rights movement, debated the commentator William F. Buckley, who was skeptical of the cause. The motion: that "The American Dream has been achieved at the expense of the American Negro."

Baldwin said, "It comes as a great shock around the age of 5, or 6, or 7, to discover that the flag to which you have pledged allegiance, along with everybody else, has not pledged allegiance to you."

Baldwin won the debate in a landslide, 544 votes to 164."

How about a behind the scenes look at the place where PLEASE STOP TRYING TO LEAVE ME author, Alana Saab, spends her writing time! 🫀💐 Swipe for a look at her desk, and read her guide below ⬇️

1. I have to have a close-to-empty desk to be able to think clearly.
2. Coffee!
3. “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino on display. My favorite book of all time and a reminder of the kind of writer I strive to be.
4. Bookshelf of my dreams that I designed and my partner got built for me. Lots of books but the colorful bindings are muted by the sheer linen sliding doors. The consistency of color keeps me focused.
5. Art by Afghan artist Assif Assefi. He made this particular piece when he was detained in American prison before being deported. It’s ketchup and pencil on paper. The painting reminds me of the issues that I try to address in my work as an American author.
6. One (of four) of my bosses.
7. Plants, obviously.
8. I like my writing space to have the same smell all the time. It's a bit ritualistic. I use a Maison Louis Marie No. 4 diffuser and a KEAP candle in Wood Cabin scent. Fun fact: I can’t smell well, but I can smell these!
9. My printer that rarely works lives menacingly in this closet.
10. A view outside or I may go crazy.

What are some of your work space comforts and must-haves?
