How did we get a TV wall? Our lighting designer just happened to be working on ANOTHER TV WALL PROJECT and drove all 20 TVs down from Boston in a van for a killer package.

Not only was this so lucky for us, he also has since sworn off being ā€œthe TV guyā€ as it truly was way too much work and they barely fit back inside the van when loading out. So the fact that we got to capture this on film before Saul retired from providing this service to anyone else is a miracle! A neon God miracle!

: Going back to the topic of AAPI representation in film, what about AAPI representation behind the camera. Do you feel that AAPI filmmakers are getting just as much representation today than the little to none gotten in the past?
kaye: No! We are underrepresented in every facet of media! There simply are not enough of us and we are nowhere near equal. Think about camera departments alone, how physically and technically intensive those jobs are, and how few women are in them in comparison to men. How rare is it still to hear about a female cinematographer, let alone a POC one? Or an editor? A gaffer? A key grip? We have a long, long, long way to go.

Even as I move forward in conversations about my first feature as an emerging female writer/director, everyone thinks that the risk they are taking is on ME and that I need an experienced, veteran crew to support my directorial debut. I agree, of course, and want all the support and expertise that I can get, but itā€™s also true that the veterans who have been working for years and years are predominantly white men and only in the past five years have the gates opened up to POCs and women, so a lot of us are just getting our first opportunity right now. I hope this changes in the coming years, but in order to get veteran women and POCs on our sets, someone needs to give them their first shot! Right now, people are still afraid to do that.

When you write a screenplay, you unusually only get 2-3 adjectives to describe your character. But one of the fun things about directing is creating character descriptions and mood boards for your wardrobe, hair and makeup team.

brought me so much joy with all the Halloween costumes she put our senior citizens in and / killed it with our inspired Trixie. Hereā€™s an excerpt from one of my favorite emails Iā€™ve ever gotten to write:

EPISODE 4 | Season: Fall | šŸ“ø .matt

Popo - This isn't in the script yet, but since we are trying to do different seasons for each episode, I thought it would be funny for it to be Halloween in the nursing home and for all the seniors to be in costumes. But like, in a sad way, where it's like they were dropped off by their families and the home is trying to make it festive but the seniors don't really care and maybe the costumes have even been put on them. I'm open for ideas, but I thought a pumpkin could be cute for Popo? I think the nursing home will be rather sparse there will be 5 extras as seniors. Of the seniors, 4 will have something sad and lazy like cat ears, a crown, a tutu, maybe a ghost costume? And then maybe one senior thatā€™s really into it is Christmas tree. Oh, and let's have the care worker be a samurai or a geisha just to show heā€™s extra offensive.

Trixie - So I'm really fascinated by how Gen-Z kids are post-race, post-gender, post-genre and I think that can be reflected in her style. I think Trixie worships Billie Eilish, probably wears baggy clothes, and has space buns. She's probably q***r/ so over heteronormativity. Iā€™d love to incorporate rainbow socks or sleeves. As an alternative Girl Scout, she either has an army vest or jacket with a mix of girl scout badges but also activist ones(think Emma Gonzolas or Lindsey Weir from Freaks and Geeks). Oh and also maybe a feminist t-shirt that says Notorious RBG.

We raised $2,272 to be split 4 ways between these organizations!

1. .to.chinatownā€™s longevity fund supports small businesses where cultural and socioeconomic barriers have prevented them from applying for assistance programs.

2. serves Asian American seniors throughout NYC, delivering weekly care packages while supporting local small businesses during their COVID-related recovery process.

3. Mutual Aid Supported Chinatown When the Government Failed. In New York, a diverse coalition of activists stocked up fridges in Chinatown with food from local grocery stores.

4. In light of the war, is on the ground in Eastern Ukraine Ramping Up Assistance for Children.

5. I had NEVER seen this before but two of my crew members who prefer to remain anonymous asked to donate their wages to organizations instead of getting paid for their time and labor. They asked me to add a note ā€œas a gift of behalf of the cast and crew of the blessing.ā€

These are the types of people Iā€™m working with! I have been so moved and inspired by the team, all the audience members who contributed money on top of their general admission ticket , and people who donated when they couldnā€™t even attend in-person!

Thank you all, the world is insane right now but you make me believe that people want empathy and DEMOCRACY.

Originally I had intended for 100% of the proceeds of The Blessing premiere to go to local orgs that support Chinatown, the first neighborhood I lived in when I moved to New York and one that has been severely hurt by the pandemic due to anti-Chinese /anti-immigrant sentiment, which has directly affected the local Chinese restaurants and small businesses.

But in light of Russia declaring war in Ukraine and the Taliban taking over in Afghanistan, weā€™re including to the orgs we will be donating to. Itā€™s not much in the grand scheme of things, but I hope these dollars will alleviate some suffering in these uncertain times.

Our event is sold out, but if youā€™d still like to donate, go to blessingseries.com -> screenings -> then follow the link to the Eventbrite. Each org will get 25% of the total amount we raise by Sunday.

Thank you for your support and keep thinking globally.

The only thing you can do is be honestā€ is what my sister, , told me upon my meltdown over how one finds the courage to actually express your most vulnerable emotions through an artistic medium and then be brave enough to let people see it.

I was a music video director and a videographer for companies for years. Iā€™d been comfortable supporting someone elseā€™s vision up until this point. So when I started writing my own stuff, I freaked out. I kept thinking. ā€œWho am I? And what if no one cares?

I have to admit that I straight up cried today. With every step of this journey, Iā€™d hoped some fairy god mother or multimillion dollar studio would swoop in and make it easier once I showed them proof of concept in either a script or the short film or five more episodes in a miniseries ready to go on Netflix.

I know in my heart, though, that while itā€™s normal to hope that someone will give you a permission slip or a green light to keep going. Often, no one will. So you just have to keep going anyway.

My series is now complete, and while there were a million stops and starts, hopes and dreams that Iā€™ve had to keep recallibrating, I am so grateful for the people who have showed me that itā€™s never a fairy godmother who waves a wand. Itā€™s a community of people who contribute little bits of what they can. Itā€™s not a big leap, but 10,000 baby steps that lay the building blocks and pave the way to your next project that will probably take the same amount of work and will feel like starting from zero again!

So as Iā€™m locked in my house for three days straight making Instagram memes, then deleting them all and reposting them because clearly that wasnā€™t the right social media strategy (but itā€™s just fu***ng me guessing how to promote this thing!) I ask you to please come on this journey with me.

Iā€™m pulling back the curtain and letting everyone know that I donā€™t know what happens now, but Iā€™ve put very last shred of myself into building this thing, top to bottom.

So go to the link in my bio, then go to my YouTube channel, subscribe and enjoy this content I made and am finally ready to share with the world! I hope you like it! But if you donā€™t, thats ok too!

Last year I cold emailed with something along the lines of ā€œHey, Iā€™m obsessed with Hamiltonā€¦ā€Burnā€ is my karaoke songā€¦I think itā€™s fierce youā€™re playing Elizaā€¦Iā€™m an AAPI writer/director and I have an script about sisters. This role is more Angelica energy but I dunno would you maybeā€¦wanna audition?ā€

SHE SAID YES and made me cry over zoom when she read the part. Since then, my sister and her have become best friends, her man and fellow original cast member became our choreographer, and our communities have joined creative forces.

However, none of that excitement compares to how it felt to see her play Eliza in Philly last night. I sobbed into my mask throughout the entire second act. Iā€™m so inspired to see this fierce Asian woman owning her space as a Broadway lead and I canā€™t believe itā€™s someone I actually know and now call a friend.

I know, I know, where is this mysterious series I supposedly shot in which Stephanie plays a version of ? Itā€™s coming itā€™s coming I SWEAR. 2022, baby. letā€™s get make it happen!
