“OMW” drops tomorrow from — the third single off his upcoming album PUSH & PULL. The pianist-composer built the song’s groove in studio with drummer and bassist Kyle Miles, who did it the old fashioned way: locking in and finding the pulse of the song in one, extended take.

“Not many humans on earth can vibe like that, like sit in a groove that deep for 5-10 minutes straight,” Gable says.

Out this Friday, “brand new key” represents a full circle moment for Nicole Zuraitis.

She has performed the song live numerous times with Melanie, the original composer and an icon of ‘60s/’70s pop (pictured above).

Touring alongside Melanie, Zuraitis came to know and love her spirit, her brilliance, and her humor.

At the same time, she also saw how the industry had failed to compensate Melanie for her success.

“She sold 82 million records and did not see any of that money,” Zuraitis says.

In light of that history, “brand new key” fits perfectly within Zuraitis’ upcoming album, siren songs volume 1, which celebrates women songwriters and their contributions to American music.

Zuraitis is a highly decorated songwriter herself — her record HOW LOVE BEGINS won the 2024 GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Album, making her the first artist, man or woman, to take home the award for a project of entirely original music and arrangements.

Siren songs honors a handful of the many women who have shaped the music we love — some heralded, some under-appreciated, all indispensable to American culture.

“Going back to the Tin Pan Alley days, there were women, especially women of color like Irene Higginbotham, who would use male pseudonyms as writers, because it’s always been a male-dominated industry.

“So when I think about women artists and issues of representation, I’m always excited to try and lift up their voices.

“Personally, I look up to them, and it’s an honor to sing their music.”

Live at the Captain's Cabin, a previously unheard recording from 1973 from trumpet legend Charles Tolliver, has arrived 🎺🔥

This album captures Tolliver and his stellar group ― pianist John Hicks, bassist Clint Houston, and drummer Cliff Barbaro ― in superb form, during a tour that took them across Canada, through the West Coast, and concluding in Los Angeles, California. Located near downtown Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, The Captain’s Cabin was an intimate underground venue, hidden below a grocery store. The small space with a makeshift recording booth held around 100 patrons

To Tolliver’s recollection, the recording of the live set wasn’t planned. “We just went on and wailed away like we normally did,” Tolliver remembers. Tolliver attributes the cohesive spontaneity of the set to the consistency of being together on the road, and purposely not over rehearsing to keep things fresh and exciting. “By the time we got to Edmonton, I mean, we were a pretty tight band.”
