Hi all! Some of you may know that Stephen Koepfer, Paul Varacchi and their friend Jared Kirby have been planning to attempt a shot for shot remake of the epic Achilles (Brad Pitt) vs Hector (Eric Bana) fight from Troy (2004). We are sharing it with our Patreon members first!
Public link drops Friday on our YouTube!
Paul and Jared spent six months practicing this choreography. Paul is not a spear and sword guy. That is Jared's bread and butter. He really prepped Paul SO WELL!
Steve broke down the original film's structure, storyboarded it, shot listed it, etc. Paul found an incredible location the mimicked Troy very well (though our location was much greener)! This 3-minute fight has 128 cuts. Some literally seconds, a few frames. It surely took them quite a bit of time to shoot the original. Reverse engineering it was a huge challenge to perform, shoot and edit. But this is why we do it. It is an incredible learning experience.
On the day our friend and aspiring stunt performer Francesca Morabito served as 1st AD, PA, continuity, script supervisor, set comedian, you name it. She really kept us on track, in line and laughing!! It was a long hot eight hours or so in the sun, but we managed to come very close to the original. Paul and Jared's knowledge of the choreography made the day much smoother than it should have been.
We hope you enjoy! We present tbe fight solo and as a side-by-side comparison - with a nice little surprise comedy element in there for you!
Performed by: Jared Kirby and Paul Varacchi
Shot and edited by: Stephen Koepfer
1st AD and Court Jester: Francesca Morabito

Episode 004 - 'There Is No Escaping Hugh Fitzgerald' drops one week from tomorrow! Here is a bit of our discussion about working on David Mamet's 'Redbelt' (2008).

Hugh Fitzgerald is a Los Angeles based actor, writer, BJJ Black Belt and fight trainer at the legendary 87 Eleven Action Design and 87 North. Nearly 20 years ago, a struggling New York based theater actor, Hugh had a chance meeting with David Mamet that would literally change his life. That meeting opened doors he never could have imagined and paved the way for a transformative career in the film industry. His foray into this world was Mamet's love story to BJJ and the Martial Arts - Redbelt - which ushered Hugh into a community of martial artists and filmmakers who would go on to become legends in the industry. We start at the opening scene of Redbelt, which offers one of the earliest depictions of BJJ and grappling on the American screen. Sit back and get ready for a thoughtful, philosophical and genuine discussion on martial arts, film, the struggles of working in the film business and magic. Yes - Magic.
