PIN UP Magazine

PIN UP Magazine PIN–UP is a Magazine for Architectural Entertainment

PIN–UP captures an architectural spirit, rather than focusing on technical details of design, by featuring interviews with architects, designers, and artists, and presenting work as an informal work in progress – a fun assembly of ideas, stories and conversations, all paired with cutting-edge photography and artwork. Both raw and glossy, the magazine is a nimble mix of genres and themes, finding i

nspiration in the high and the low by casting a refreshingly playful eye on rare architectural gems, amazing interiors, smart design, and that fascinating area where those areas connect with contemporary art.

SHOHEI SHIGEMATSU
Interview by Felix Burrichter

“To push architecture forward, you have to build, and then you have to see how people use that building to verify your assumptions and move productively on to the next one. You can’t achieve the ultimate goal without that verification in the real world.”

An Abbreviated History of Domicide, by India Ennenga

“A house can be rebuilt. A home cannot. Like the building closures of our ancient counterparts, modern domicide seeks to disentangle people and place, stripping geographies of meaning and recasting their populations as rootless exiles. This is the mobilization of architecture as a tool of war — construction perverted into destruction.”

𝘈𝘙𝘊𝘜𝘚 (𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘣𝘰𝘸)

A memorial for homosexuals persecuted during the N**i era, 𝘈𝘙𝘊𝘜𝘚 (𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘣𝘰𝘸) was inaugurated last June in Vienna, Austria. Created by and , it comprises six arched pipes, a rainbow in six shades of gray, standing on a low egg-shaped plinth.

At a time of corporate commodification of the gay liberation movement’s original rainbow iconography, 𝘈𝘙𝘊𝘜𝘚 (𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘣𝘰𝘸) represents a “minimalist idiom [that] stretches a threshold between these contradictions, collapsing not the space but the time that separates them.”

A year ago, the designer locked himself away for a week in a warehouse-like space in Bushwick. With him were (most of) his inventory to date, pieces that go back to the beginning of his career in the early 2000s and were stored in different locations, some even in disrepair.

With the rigor of an archivist, Lamb inspected everything for damage, added finishes where needed (sanding, oiling, or carving), and cataloged them meticulously. The result of this painstaking process is now on view at , where his exhibition 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 opened on February 29, 2024.

A tour de force across four floors, the show provides a sweeping overview of an outstanding oeuvre. Lamb is known to approach his practice with the obsessive zeal and ambition of an athlete, pushing material possibilities (and himself) to the extreme, sometimes at the expense of his physical integrity. From his early work pouring pewter into the sandy beaches of Cornwall to his most recent experiments with Polystyrene, Polyurethane, and leather, there are few materials and production methods Lamb hasn’t explored: stone, wood, paper, cardboard, stainless steel, bronze, aluminum, brass, MDF, phenolic paper board, leather, glass, Polyurethane, to name but a few. This near-obsessive indulgence with the material is now on full display at
